Administrative Assistant-Technical Services, Shrewsbury Public Library (Shrewsbury)

The Shrewsbury Public Library is seeking a responsible, detail-oriented individual to join our Technical Services team as an Administrative Assistant! The Administrative Assistant is responsible for cataloging new materials, including books, audio visual materials, periodicals, art prints, and Library of Things items. 

Essential Functions:

·       Completes descriptive cataloging for all library materials; verifies shelf list filing for accuracy.

·       Processes all print and other library materials, including cataloging, retroactive conversion, OCLC and end processing; verifies invoices for accuracy and completes labeling of new materials.

·       Facilitates search of CW MARS database; enters and maintains accurate data; notifies CW MARS of database errors; creates online bibliographic records.

·       Uses the integrated library system to retrieve, enter, alter, delete, or interpret bibliographic, item, and acquisitions records.

·       Responds to patron requests for materials by placing holds on items from other libraries.

·       Repairs damaged library items; discards damaged or outdated items.

·       Charges and discharges materials and responds to patron requests when assigned to Circulation Desk or Children’s Room; assists with maintenance of the Adult Services collection; types, checks and files orders; selects and purchases materials for designated portion of the collection.

·       Oversees the work of library pages and volunteers to process and repair library materials.

·       Performs similar or related work, as required, or as situation dictates.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school diploma required; two years of library experience, including experience working with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Knowledge of library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and information technology. Knowledge of ILS Evergreen, and the Dewey Decimal System. 

Ability to work with attention to detail and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to learn computer operations and related library databases. Ability to operate library equipment. Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons. 

Organizational and customer service skills. Oral and written communication skills. Computer and typing skills. Basic research skills.
