Reference Librarian - Adult Services, Brockton Public Library (Brockton)
The Reference Librarian in Adult Services (35 hrs/week) is responsible for a variety of public services and reference duties to support the daily operations of the Adult Services Department. These duties include:
- Actively assists adult and young adult patrons in using print, nonprint, and electronic resources to secure information
- Selects and weeds nonfiction and nonprint material in designated areas
- Participates in decisions regarding uses of all electronic technology
- Assists patrons in using computer resources, scanners, copiers, and faxing machines
- Researches local history information, including obituaries
- Prepares reader's advisory materials and LibGuides
- Works with community, agencies, and groups to enable the library to better serve patrons
- Inputs data in the OCLN database
- Maintains book displays and exhibits
- Participates in workshop and training opportunities
- Serves on professional and network committees, as designated by the Head Adult Services Librarian, Assistant Library Director, or Library Director
- May be required to serve as "Librarian in Charge" in the absence of Supervisors, Assistant Library Director, or Library Director
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Head Adult Services Librarian, Assistant Library Director, or Library Director
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and experience: MLS candidate required, MLS preferred (if candidate, must receive degree within 5 years of appointment). Ability to fluently converse in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole or another language besides English as spoken by one of Brockton's linguistic communities desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- The ability to meet scheduling requirements of the library required.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and work independently as well as with a department.
- Ability to relate to patrons and staff with professional friendliness, patience, tact, and resourcefulness.
- Working knowledge of computers with a broad understanding of library technology.
- A willingness and ability to learn new procedures quickly and thoroughly; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
