Library Associate – Youth Services
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
This is responsible, professional library work involving some supervisory responsibility with emphasis on youth services.
Work involves participating in the services and activities of a library program of broad scope, activity, and staff.
Under general supervision of the Library Director or designated Department Head, performs a range of complex and specialized library tasks requiring a high level of professional expertise and customer service skills with emphasis on youth services work.
Work is performed with relative independence in accordance with established standards and procedures under the direction of an administrative superior who reviews work through reports, departmental meetings, conferences, and occasional inspections. Supervision may be exercised over volunteers.
This position is full-time (35 hours per week) and includes morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday work hours.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists children, students and parents in using library services and facilities.
Assists Youth Services Librarian with programming.
Prepares and presents some programs for children aged birth through 18.
Prepares and presents some publicity materials.
Assists with collection development of the Children’s & Teen materials.
Assists in maintaining a vibrant Children's Room and Teen Space through the use of posters, bulletin boards and interactive spaces.
Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Ability to relate in a friendly and open manner with children and parents.
Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of modern library science.
Considerable knowledge of children’s reader interest levels, and of children’s authors and books in general.
Knowledge of automated library systems, microcomputers and the Internet.
Ability to present ideas, provide instruction, and to perform storytelling and other programs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative personnel, colleagues, subordinates, civic organizations, and the general public.
Ability to interpret library services and activities to patrons, interested organizations, and the general public.
Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Ability to make independent responsible decisions.
Maintain clerical records of complexity and prepare reports as needed.
Provide workshops for students and/or teachers regarding how to use the library materials to help in the classroom or to help with homework.
Enjoyment of working with children.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from a four-year college or university required, with some work in library science.
Experience as a pre-professional librarian preferred.
Experience working with children and teens and presenting programs for children and teens.
