Head of Adult Services, Westwood Public Library (Westwood)
The Westwood Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, community-focused professional Librarian to fill the position of Head of Adult Services. The Head of Adult Services will plan and execute diverse and vibrant programming, strong Readers’ Advisory, and robust materials collection development for adults at the Westwood Public Library (WPL). This is a time of innovation at WPL. We just completed our Strategic plan which will guide us into the future of library services such as adding a new Book Mobile and a new Media Suite to our library.

Responsibilities and Duties:
Provides a broad range of library services, including reference and information service, Readers’ Advisory and technology assistance to the public at the Main and Branch Libraries.
Selects and purchases print and non-print library materials for adults; oversees expense budget; utilizes online acquisitions system.
Manages the purchase of gift books for the Friends of the Library contributors, miscellaneous gifts; monitors finances for these funds and maintains records of purchases.
Provides instruction in computer, e-reader, tablet and smart phone use, individually or in group classes. Performs basic troubleshooting for public computers and other technology devices.
Trains and demonstrates basic computer procedures, library applications (OverDrive, Hoopla, etc.) and meeting room technology to library staff.
Supervises and trains Adult Reference Librarians. Maintains the Adult Services Department schedule.
Seeks and applies for additional funding opportunities for programs to benefit adult patrons.
Prepares booklists and book displays; assists other library departments, as needed. Proctors exams.
Keeps current in aspects of librarianship: e.g., technology, literature, news, emerging trends. Incorporates new and existing technology as appropriate to enhance library’s adult resources and services.
Organizes and implements a variety of library adult programs. Designs effective print and non-print materials (including social media initiatives) to publicize literacy, library resources, services and programs.
Hours: 35 hours per week to include one evening per week and one Saturday every six weeks.
Qualifications
M.L.S. from an A.L.A.-accredited institution and a minimum of 5 years of experience in library operations, including acquisitions, reference, and collection development; supervisory experience preferred. Proven track record working with adults, particularly in a public library setting. Must have a solid understanding of technology and social media and excellent public relations and research skills. Thorough knowledge of library principles and practices, particularly as they relate to library advocacy and outreach, including such tenets as equity, diversity and inclusion, intellectual freedom, literacy, and patron privacy.
