Children's Librarian II, Winthrop Public Library & Museum (Winthrop)

General Description         

            The Children’s Librarian II works under the direction of the Children’s Librarian I, and the Library Director. This is a professional position that is responsible for many aspects of library services within the youth services department. Children’s Librarian II works directly with teens and teen outreach but also assists in the implementation and management of all youth services which may include reference and readers advisory services; instructing customers in the use of library resources and technology, collection development, cataloging, circulation, developing and conducting programs for children.  The librarian maintains currency in emerging library trends, developments in all areas of children’s literature and services, as well as library computer technology including our catalog and databases.  This librarian also makes recommendations to and advises the Children’s Librarian I in all aspects of youth services.  

35 hours per week. 

Some evenings and every other weekends required. 

Duties:

·         Plans and implements programming for children and families. Conducts story hours and/or craft programs.

·         The Children’s Librarian II is directly responsible for working with teens.  This position plans and implements teen programming and outreach.  

·         Assists in training all other staff in the tasks and functions of the children’s room.  

·         Works with the Winthrop School system to coordinate programs and activities for children.  

·         Demonstrates considerable customer service skills.  

·         Assists patrons of all ages in locating materials, and in computer use.

·         Performs circulation duties which includes checking materials in and out, pursuing overdue materials, collecting fines, issuing new cards. 

·         Orders new books and other materials for the Young Adult collection. 

·         Performs all aspects of circulation services as needed, including registering library users; charging, discharging and renewing library materials; placing and filling user holds; collecting fees and fines; explaining policies and procedures; processing reports and notices, etc.

·         Collection development is ongoing. 

·         Keeps accurate statistics on activities, and accurately accounts for funds collected.

·         Assists in development and maintenance of content for social media platforms. 

·         Generates reports as needed and attends network meetings or training as required.  

·         Represents the library well at appropriate local or regional meetings, trainings or seminars. 

·         Related work as needed.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficient in use of Word, Excel, Publisher, online calendar and other software.  Able to troubleshoot problems and assist patrons with their computer needs.  Comfortable with other technology such as iPad, Chromebook, etc. 
Ability to comprehend and implement Evergreen practices and procedures.  Complete understanding of Evergreen system as it pertains to circulation functions such as Holds, Reports, Patrons, Searching and others is essential.  [training for this is provided]
Possesses knowledge and ability to use and train others in the use of databases for patrons.  
Attention to detail.
Ability to work well independently or as part of a team.  
Able to effectively prioritize tasks and handle interruptions skillfully.  
Ability to identify and analyze complex issues, and develop appropriate resolutions.
Strong supervisory skills needed.  

Qualifications

Qualifications

·         MLS is preferred, a Bachelors in a related field is required with related experience taken into account. 

·         Knowledge of reader interest levels, genres, and being well read are highly desirable. 

·         Knowledge of early literacy and STEAM practices and programming preferred. 

·         Must possess a positive customer service attitude, professional demeanor and ability to be friendly, courteous and tactful with the public.

·         While performing duties on this job, the employee is required to: 

          Sit and stand for extended periods of time, to bend, stoop, squat, sit on the floor. 

          Lift and carry books and other library materials up to 50 pounds and push loaded book carts up to 150 pounds and operate office equipment,         
          including computers, printers, copiers and related equipment.
