Children's Librarian, Salisbury Public Library (Salisbury)

The Children’s Librarian in responsible for maintaining a welcoming children’s room with activities and up-to-date resources. They organize and coordinate a variety of programs and services to promote reading and enhance the lives of young library users and their families while responding to community needs and promoting reading and literacy with a focus on outreach and community partnerships.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The items listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed and is not to be considered a full and complete list of all duties and responsibilities. Other reasonably related tasks may be assigned. The Children’s Librarian:

·         Plans, delivers, and evaluates programs and activities for children from infancy to age 12

·         Develops and administers programs in the library and out in the community

·         Conducts group visits and tours

·         Develops and maintains relationships with schools and outside groups to promote library services and programs

·         Keeps current with trends related to library services by attending professional meetings and workshops

·         Participates in appropriate professional organizations and committees to further the library’s mission

·         Interprets and applies library policies and procedures for customers and resolves customer complaints

·         Assists in developing and maintaining juvenile materials collections and information resources such as print publications, electronic resources, website content, and social media. 

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALITIES

·         Knowledge of current children’s literature trends

·         Highly self-motivated, energetic, creative, and flexible with the ability to prioritize tasks 

·         Must be able to work independently while also functioning as part of a team

·         Ability to work with children both individually and in groups

·         Ability to deal effectively with parents, teachers, and other adults working with children 

·         Proficient with a Microsoft operating system, Microsoft Word, and Excel

·         Willingness to learn new technology and other skills and evolve with the profession

·         Must have a commitment to making positive connections with children and teens

·         Working knowledge of library procedures

·         Commitment of excellence in customer service

·         Ability to maintain favorable public relations

·         Ability to work effectively as a member of a team

·         Ability to fairly and tactfully explain library policies to patrons and resolve issues

·         Must be able to work regularly scheduled nights and weekends

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, applicants must have at a minimum the following:

·         High School Diploma

·         Two (2) years’ experience in a professional environment or customer service

·         Familiarity with library services

·         Ability to pass a CORI

·         Reliable mode of transportation

DESIRED QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants will gain special consideration if they have the following qualities or qualifications:

·         Associates or higher in a related field

·         Experience working in a public library as a part-time or full-time librarian

·         Experience working professionally with children or teens

·         Experience creating programs for children

·         Experience working with schools or social services agencies
