Associate Reference Librarian, Phillips Library (Rowley)

The Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum is among the oldest libraries in America. Rich primary and secondary sources – including vast quantities of manuscripts, books, photographs, maps, broadsides and ephemera – make it a fruitful location for research and discovery. The library is based at PEM’s James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes Collection Center, a state-of-the-art facility with secure and climate-controlled storage, in Rowley, Massachusetts.

The Associate Reference Librarian works closely alongside the Reference team to identify and interpret the needs of Phillips Library’s local, regional, and global users to achieve the overall goal of excellent library service. Their core responsibilities include providing reference, reader’s advisory, and referral services in person, by telephone, and via email; assisting order fulfillment for reproductions of library materials; and gathering and reporting on library statistical data. Primary outward-facing duties to engage the library’s various audiences are: leading the library’s social media presence; participating in library programs; and conducting occasional user surveys to assess our performance. They are expected to maintain familiarity with the collection, recommending acquisitions to help improve it, and participate collaboratively in library- and museum-wide projects and initiatives. The Associate Reference Librarian supervises the Reference Assistant.

A minimum of three years of experience providing library reference services, including sensitivity to proper care and handling of special collections materials, is preferred. Familiarity with the primary reference tools and standards used in libraries and archives is a plus, along with the ability to work closely and cooperatively with an experienced and diverse staff as well as the general public. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a positive attitude will help the ideal candidate be successful in this role. Strong interpersonal skills, a willingness to take initiative in identifying and fulfilling needs, and comfort with change are essential. Familiarity with Google and Microsoft or similar platforms is required.

Applications received by November 19, 2023 will be given priority consideration.

PEM is committed to enhancing diversity in its staff, visitors, exhibitions and programs while promoting an inclusive environment. We seek candidates who can contribute to that goal and encourage you to apply and to identify your strengths in these areas.
