Technology Services/Reference Librarian, Weymouth Public Libraries (Weymouth)

Schedule when open on Saturdays: Monday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Tuesday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and every third Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the following Friday off.

Definition
The Weymouth Public Libraries is in need of a professional and self-starting librarian interested in being a key member of a progressive, dynamic library system. We seek an outgoing, innovative, collaborative, flexible, and service-oriented librarian to provide technology and reference services. Our culture of “Yes!” has resulted in a large growth in programs and services for grateful and increasingly engaged library patrons and local decision makers. We are fortunate to be in a state-of-the-art new building, which has a Digital Media Lab, 46 public computers as well as meeting and study rooms, equipped with collaboration tools and device mirroring capabilities.

Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Head of Reference & Adult Services. May receive technology-related direction and guidance from the Town of Weymouth’s Chief Information Officer with the approval of the Head of Reference & Adult Services.

Job Environment
Work is performed under typical public library conditions. The work environment is moderately quiet. Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours. In addition, may be required to work on weekends and evenings when staffing levels and staffing situations dictate. Operate computer and other standard office equipment. Daily contact with library patrons, other town departments, vendors, and other library organizations by phone, in person, and in writing.

Essential Functions

As part of a team of reference librarians, provides general library reference services, reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory service, and technology assistance to a diverse public, primarily adults and teenagers at the public service desk. May provide desk coverage for the Teen Room as needed.
Develops and teaches skill-based classes in technology to groups of patrons, as well as taking the lead on providing one-on-one technology support. Performs basic troubleshooting of library software and hardware. Works with staff to develop technology competencies, and creates and delivers staff training as needed. 
Supports and troubleshoots technologies for the delivery and evaluation of library services including but not limited to: the integrated library system (ILS), licensed databases, digital collections, statistical dashboards, the library website, email and social networking marketing, and communication/graphic design production. Participates in updating website and social media presence. Supports ongoing digitization of the library's local history collections.
Manages and supports information technology systems for the library. Provides basic technical administration of the library’s computer network systems intended to complement but not supplant the work of the Town’s Information Technology staff. Installs, configures, and maintains library computer hardware and software. Assists in maintaining and troubleshooting the wireless internet access; manages and maintains audiovisual equipment; and assists with troubleshooting the telephone system.
Recommends technology equipment purchases and the procurement of support services. 
Identifies and recommends additional databases and other digital resources or tools for purchase or subscription. Maintains records to document and facilitate software and database licensing and relicensing; maintains preventative maintenance and replacement schedules for all information technology and audiovisual hardware, and prepares a written Technology Plan, as required. 
Participates in professional development to gain additional knowledge and skills, and shares new knowledge and skills with colleagues as appropriate.

Qualifications

Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Master’s degree in library and information sciences from an ALA-accredited school. Applicants with a degree in progress and some relevant work experience may be considered. Experience of at least one year working in a public library setting preferred. Experience with library instruction, integrated library systems, hardware, and software preferred. 

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of library principles and practices in reference. Thorough knowledge of emerging trends and resources in technology services. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Suite, or similar products; graphic design software such as Canva; Windows operating systems and networking; basic computer and peripheral hardware support and troubleshooting; software applications support; and network printer configuration and troubleshooting.

Ability and Skill: Familiarity, comfort, and skill with library digital media services and other library databases, as well as downloadable media, blogging tools, social networks, and website content maintenance. A strong public service commitment. Excellent skills in interpersonal relations, and written, oral, and online communication. Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Ability to excel as a teacher in a group setting or one on one. Ability to work creatively, effectively, independently, and cooperatively with colleagues, patrons, and the community at large. Ability to foster open communication and cooperative relationships. Ability to troubleshoot software and hardware.

Physical Requirements
Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
