Programming and Outreach Assistant, Otis Library, Inc (Otis)

JOB SUMMARY:

This position includes preparing for and leading program activities for the Otis Library. The focus is the development and implementation of programs for Otis’ youth and adults. The occupant of this position is expected to find programming activities, work on community outreach, work on creating funding opportunities, and lead the programs. This position is intended to grow into a more substantial position over time.  

SUPERVISION:

The Part-Time Program & Outreach Assistant reports to the Library Director/Assistant Director. This position will be evaluated first after 3 months and then annually from the date of hire. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Identifies opportunities for new and enhanced Adult/YA/Children’s programs, collaborating with library staff and community partners to develop, plan, and implement programs that meet the needs of the community following the library’s mission. 

• Supports the promotion of all library programs and services throughout the community using a variety of different formats and outlets including websites, posters, physical and e-newsletters, and other promotional venues.

• Identifies trends and opportunities and plans adult, young adult, and children programming accordingly.

• Stays informed of professional issues, trends, and attitudes within both the library profession and the local community.

• Provides circulation desk support including reader’s advisory, reference services, and computer support as scheduled or required.

• Maintains a broad knowledge of print, electronic, and community resources and their availability and location.

• Other special projects and duties as assigned by the Library Director in support of the library’s mission.

Qualifications

 • Interpersonal skills including the desire to interact and serve the library patrons and community.

 • Knowledge of developmental, recreational, and educational needs of adults in the community.

• Ability to use initiative, organize, set goals, and follow procedures.

 • Strong decision-making skills; accuracy, initiative, and ability to be creative and forward-thinking; ability to use sound judgment and logical reasoning to resolve problems.

• Excellent computer knowledge and understanding of library technology, including Evergreen.

• Familiarity with web development tools including WordPress, HTML, and CSS.

• Knowledge of audio-video technology and graphic design software (i.e. Canva).

• Knowledge of reference materials, library collections, and trends and issues in the profession.

• Strong commitment to public service.

• Excellent communication and customer service skills.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Must be available to work evenings and weekends.

ANTICIPATED WEEKLY HOURS AND PAY RATE:

Hours: 6-10 per week @ $18-20 per Trustees recommendation.
