Children's Librarian, Brockton Public Library (Brockton)

The City of Champions is hiring!  We are seeking an accessible and self-confident Children's Librarian to join our team.  The Children's Librarian enjoys working with kids, is primarily tasked with developing children's' literature collections and coordinates children's programming and activities within the Brockton community. The candidate is a children's' expert who presents themselves as the library's go-to person for all things child related. The successful candidate will have the creative freedom to implement their individual vision of a successful urban library children's department. This rewarding role places the candidate in an impactful community leadership position due to their proximity and influence on the younger demographics, helping shape a positive future for Brockton.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Trains and supervises subordinate departmental personnel (Staff and volunteers)

Assists in developing print and non-print collection for Main Library's children's room including: selecting titles, weeding, evaluating donations, and assessing mending needs

Provides reference and readers' advisory service to patrons    

Prepares readers advisory materials and aids

Plans, promotes, and conducts storytelling sessions and other special events for children

Assists patrons and staff in using computer resources

Works with public and private schools

Performs community outreach activities involving children

Inputs or oversees the inputting of data into the OCLN database

Provides a wide range of circulation services: charges, renews, reserves, and shelves library materials; issues library cards; processes overdue notices and reports

Maintains displays and exhibits

Assists in the development of library policies and procedures

Serves on professional and network committees

Substitutes in any department or at any Branch Library when circumstances call for such a temporary transfer

May be required to serve as "Librarian in Charge" in the absence of the Assistant Library Director and Library Director

Performs other duties as assigned by the Head of Children's Services, Assistant Library Director or Library Director

This is a year-round position that is required to work one or two evenings a week and two Saturdays out of four in a month.

 SUPERVISION:                                                                                                                                                          

Works under the supervision of the Head Children's Librarian; plans, prioritizes and carries out work in accordance with standard practices and departmental training.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

MLS or Master of Education in Library Media Studies candidate required, MLS or Master of Education in Library Media Studies preferred (if candidate, must receive degree within 5 years of appointment)

Knowledge of children's literature and reference sources required

Experience in children's programming preferred

Technical skills searching the Internet, online services and CD ROM products required

Ability to train and supervise assigned employees and /or volunteers

Ability to relate to children, parents, teachers and staff with professional friendliness, patience, tact and resourcefulness

Ability to converse in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Creole or another language spoken by one of Brockton's linguistic minority communities is desirable.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

MLS or Master of Education in Library Media Studies candidate required, MLS or Master of Education in Library Media Studies preferred
