Senior Children's Librarian, Peabody Institute Library (Peabody)

Responsible for managing department that provides library services to children including: formulating short-term and strategic departmental goals and planning based on community trends; developing and enforcing policy and procedures as required for smooth operation of library services; keeping abreast of latest trends in children’s literature and best practices in children’s librarianship; collection development and maintenance including materials selection and weeding; program development including summer reading programs, story hours, etc.; demonstrating competence in current and emerging technologies for children and staff; readers' advisory services; staff supervision, training and evaluation; department scheduling; coordinating appropriate activities and policies with Teen Librarian and other Senior Staff and departments; providing technology assistance and troubleshooting for children and their caregivers; serving as library’s senior representative of children’s services to the public and at professional meetings and workshops; outreach services to public schools and other community agencies. Performs other similar duties pertaining to the functions and goals of the Main Library & Branch Children's Departments.

Circulation
● Oversees, trains and manages departmental staff in all aspects of circulation transactions,
including: use of library software systems; managing daily pick list; organizing circulation desk
and staff schedules for optimum function.
● Works regular circulation desk shifts to assist patrons.

Collection development
● Manages & evaluates the development and maintenance of Children’s Room collections of print,
media and online resources.
● Supervises staff in all aspects of: record-keeping and materials budget accounting, acquisitions
and development of collections.
● Evaluates the relevance of collections weeding outdated materials
● Catalogs and processes materials using current classification practices.
Program Development
● Develops and plans programs and services to meet current and emerging needs of children.
● Supervises and trains staff in the development and execution of programs including: supervision
of children enrolled in programs; overseeing program registration; use of scheduling and
registration tools to manage programs and attendance.

Readers’ Advisory Services
● Creates timely book and literacy displays.
● Demonstrates knowledge of children’s literature and professional competence to inquiries and
literacy-based discussions.
● Provides sound recommendations of appropriate reading at various reading levels.
● Performs regular outreach including book talks at schools and community spaces.
● Assists patrons with access to current online collections.

Staff Supervision
● Manages and oversees all aspects of staff activities.
● Provides technical training to staff for use of ILS and other technologies.
● Manages daily operations of Children’s Room and staff, staffing schedule.
● Evaluates staff performance and provides refresher training.
● Guides staff in the development of readers’ services and career skills.

Outreach
● Establishes and maintains relationships with elementary schools throughout Peabody, including
School Council meetings (when schedule allows), field trip invitations and school visits to
promote library programs, services and more.
● Establishes and maintains collaborations with community organizations whose focus is children.

Qualifications

This position requires an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution. Candidates who are
currently enrolled in such a program and who have demonstrated progress toward an MLS degree may
be considered. Successful candidates will have at least two years relevant experience that includes
outstanding public service, instruction and technology skills, and management experience. Schedule
includes one evening per week and every 2nd Saturday.
