Library Assistant - Children's Services, Medfield Public Library (Medfield)

Medfield, an idyllic suburb of Boston, has an immediate opening for a Children’s Library Assistant in a busy and thriving Children’s Department. We are seeking a friendly candidate who is passionate about children's literacy and is excited to join our collaborative team! This position will have a primary focus on providing excellent customer service to children and their caregivers while using the children’s area of the library. This position may also include planning and presenting engaging, interactive, and educational programming for children and caregivers, with an emphasis on babies, toddlers, and preschoolers.

The Children’s Library Assistant provides friendly and efficient service to patrons of all ages in the Children’s Department and collaborates with the Children’s Library team. The Children’s Library Assistant is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her/their direction and control. This position performs all other related duties as required including: recommending books, DVDs, audiobooks, and items from the Toys and Games collection to patrons; planning and presenting programs for children and caregivers, (primarily birth through preschool ages); overseeing department in the absence of the Children’s Librarian; occasionally overseeing the work of Library Pages and volunteers in a non-supervisory capacity.

This is an approximately 17 hour/week, non-benefited position. Hours will include at least two weekdays (availability to work on Mondays is preferred), and a 12-5 pm shift every Sunday, Labor Day – Memorial Day, with a Sunday differential. 

The ideal candidate will have the following:

- Ability to work with library customers and staff in a friendly, efficient manner

- Ability to listen and communicate effectively with children and caregivers

- Ability to perform routine clerical and record-keeping tasks repetitively, accurately, and efficiently

- Ability to learn and use computerized library catalog systems and related equipment

- Ability to operate standard office equipment

- Ability to maintain reliable attendance and a regular schedule

- Excellent customer service skills

- Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal and problem-solving skills

- Basic computer skills

- Experience or interest in children’s programming to include creative displays and crafts.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience developing lesson plans in a school or a library setting. Background in services for children strongly preferred. Clerical or library clerical experience preferred. One year of customer service experience preferred. Shift or team leader experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate’s Degree preferred.

Salary Notes

Starting salary of $20.82/hr with annual step increases. Sunday differential.
