Library Assistant, Merrick Public Library (Brookfield)

The Merrick Public Library seeks a part-time/substitute library assistant to join our team! The desired candidate must deliver exceptional customer service, attend closely to detail, possess confidence in interpreting and enforcing library policies and procedures, and enjoy interacting with the general public. Regular schedule will be six (6) hours per week: Tuesdays 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Hours may vary as needed to cover staff illness or vacations, and may include day, evening, and weekend shifts. Responsibilities will include:

- Providing circulation desk coverage and answering basic directional and informational questions.
- Using library catalog software to check in / check out / renew library materials.
- Assisting patrons with using/troubleshooting public computers, mobile devices, printers, copier, scanner, and fax machine.
- Shelving library materials and performing stacks maintenance tasks (i.e., shifting, straightening, shelf reading). 
- Pulling and processing circulation holds; fulfilling interlibrary loan requests.
- Straightening the circulation desk and common areas, as needed.
- Processing newly cataloged books and media.
- Maintaining or organizing files.
- Assisting with other library projects, as assigned.

Qualifications

Skills Needed: excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively, deal tactfully, and maintain a professional demeanor with staff and patrons; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately and thoroughly; detail-oriented, organized, and able to prioritize, pivot between tasks, and work with distractions; proficiency with computers and working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and basic search techniques; ability to lift up to 25 pounds; ability to retrieve and shelve library materials from 3 inches to over 6 feet off the floor.

Minimum Experience:  At least one year experience working in a library, customer service, or clerical setting preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Technology experience is essential.

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent. 

Preferred Qualifications: Two or more years of library experience; experience with Evergreen or an equivalent integrated library system.
