Youth Services Librarian, Millicent Library (Fairhaven)
The Millicent Library is seeking a creative, community focused Youth Services Librarian to bring a professional, warm, and compassionate approach to serving children and families. Housed in a Richardsonian Romanesque style building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the library is steeped in rich history and tradition while remaining innovative and aspirational in its commitment to the community. The Youth Services Librarian will play an active role in advancing the library’s new strategic plan, helping to shape and expand its impact as a vital and vibrant community hub.
Position Summary
The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating library services for children from birth through grade 5 and their caregivers. This position focuses on early literacy, engaging programming, and maintaining a welcoming, inclusive youth services space. The Youth Librarian supervises one part-time Youth Services Assistant.
Essential Responsibilities
Youth Programming & Services
• Plan, promote, and implement a range
of children’s programs, including storytimes, school-
age programs, and special events
•
Lead and coordinate the Summer Reading Program
• Develop programs that support early
literacy, school readiness, and community connection
• Maintain a welcoming, safe, and
organized children’s area
Collection Development &
Maintenance</ strong>
• Select, process, and maintain the
children’s collection (books, media, and program-
related materials)
• Perform ongoing
weeding and collection assessment
•
Stay current with trends in children’s
literature and professional best practices
Public Service
• Provide reader’s advisory
services and literacy support to children and
caregivers
• Assist patrons with
general library use and basic technology needs
• Participate in circulation desk coverage
as needed
• Perform other duties as
assigned
Supervision
• Supervise and collaborate with one
part-time Youth Services Assistant
Youth-Focused Outreach
• Conduct occasional visits to schools
and youth-serving organizations.

Coordinate tours of the library when requested.
• Participate in local youth-
focused community partnerships.
Qualifications
Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Library
Science from an ALA-accredited institution is strongly
preferred
• Experience working with
children of all ages
• Knowledge of
early literacy practices and child development
• Strong communication and organizational
skills
• Ability to work evenings and
Saturdays as required
Physical Requirements
Reach and retrieve books at high and low shelf heights; ability to stand/sit for prolonged periods of time; to lift and/or move up to 50lbs.

37 hours per week position, evenings and Saturdays are required.
