Adult Reference Librarian, Lawrence Public Library (Lawrence)
The Adult Reference Librarian provides high-quality reference, information, and readers’ advisory services for the adult community of Lawrence. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining the adult collections, supporting lifelong learning through programming and outreach, and assisting patrons in navigating print, digital, and electronic resources.
The Reference Librarian collaborates closely with the Special Collections Archivist to connect patrons with both contemporary and historical resources, ensuring the community has comprehensive access to knowledge and cultural heritage.
Provides in-person, telephone, chat, and email reference services to adult patrons.
Guides patrons in the use of library catalogs, databases, electronic resources, and research tools.
Conducts readers’ advisory and promotes adult collections across all formats.
Provides instruction and support for digital literacy, information literacy, and research skills.
Collaborates with the Special Collections Archivist when reference questions require integration of archival or historical materials.
Develops and maintains the adult nonfiction, fiction, and digital collections to ensure materials reflect the diverse needs and interests of the community.
Evaluates use statistics, community requests, and professional reviews to guide acquisitions and deselection.
Coordinates with the Archivist on incorporating local authors, historical works, and cultural heritage materials into the library’s offerings.
Plans, implements, and evaluates adult programs, workshops, and author talks in collaboration with the Outreach and Program Coordinator.
Coordinates with Outreach and Program Coordinator to establish partnerships with local organizations, schools, and agencies to promote adult services.
Partners with the Special Collections Archivist to develop programs that highlight both current resources and archival holdings, such as local history lectures or author/archivist collaborations.
Coordinates with Digital Navigator to assist patrons with emerging technologies, e-resources, and personal devices.
Creates user guides, tutorials, and promotional materials to enhance resource discovery and usage.
Collaborates with staff on workshops or instructional sessions related to information and digital literacy.
Supervises library assistants, interns, and volunteers working in adult services.
Maintains knowledge of current trends in library services, technologies, and community learning needs.
Contributes to policy discussions, planning initiatives, and departmental goals.
Assists in preparing reports, proposals, and documentation related to adult services.
Qualifications
Must have completed a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), or be actively enrolled with the ability to complete all degree requirements within one (1) year from the date of hire. • Public library reference or adult services experience preferred. • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills. • Demonstrated ability to provide reference, readers’ advisory, and instruction. • Familiarity with electronic resources, databases, and emerging technologies. • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, community partners, and diverse patron populations. • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
