Youth Services Librarian, Medfield Public Library (Medfield)
Medfield, an idyllic suburb of Boston, has an immediate opening for a full-time Youth Services Librarian. We are looking for a high-energy, engaging, and upbeat person who loves working with children and young adults and thrives in a highly social, bustling environment.
Overview
The Youth Services Librarian will bring friendly and efficient service and strong relationship-building skills to our two youth-focused desks. This individual will spend mornings in the Children’s department during our busiest programming hours, and afternoons at the Reference Desk—adjacent to the Teen Space—during the after-school rush.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborating with the Children’s Library team to provide children and caregivers with materials, information, programs, and services
- Acting as an ongoing and welcoming touch point for teen patrons looking to book study rooms, find materials for school, and socialize with peers in our Teen Space
- Setting behavioral expectations with young patrons in regard to safe and appropriate conduct in the library
- Planning and presenting both active and passive programs for children and their caregivers, including story times, hands-on activities, and third-party programmers
- Recommending books, toys, and games that speak to patron interests
- Supervising the work of teen library pages and volunteers
- Finding creative ways to engage with teen patrons and encourage participation in programs tailored to their interests
- Providing outreach to local schools and promoting library programs and services
- When at the reference desk, confidently guiding tech-hesitant patrons through the process of printing, copying, and faxing
- Maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of systems and processes
Ideal Candidate
- A calm-under-pressure personality; there may be a meltdown over the pretend kitchen, an incoming phone call, and multiple families looking for help, but this person stays cool as a cucumber!
- Comfortable getting crafty; some of our hit offerings include drop-in crafts and take-and-make kits, so the ideal candidate will enjoy scouring Pinterest for cute projects for little hands and helping bring them to life.
- Has a working knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work, notably: relationship building, inclusive programming, literacy promotion, and collection fluency
- Is fluent in library technologies. This person is comfortable searching for materials in our online library catalog system, navigating library apps for e-material access (e.g. Libby), and helping patrons troubleshoot technology.
- Works with library patrons in a friendly, efficient manner. Our staff listen to and communicate effectively with everyone who walks through our doors.
- Enjoys and is successful at workplace collaboration. This position will report directly to the director of the library, but will be responsible for collaborating with other library departments and staff members.
- Perform routine clerical and record-keeping tasks with efficiency and focus
- Is passionate about providing a safe and welcoming setting where the stories on our shelves reflect a variety of experiences and inspire the imagination.
Qualifications
- Previous work experience with children in a library or school setting is preferred
- Masters degree in Library Science or Education is a plus
- Fluency in and enthusiasm for children’s, middle school, and young adult literature
- Comfort bending down to access low shelves and lifting up to 30 pounds
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
