Library Director, Falmouth Public Library (Falmouth)

The Falmouth Board of Library Trustees is seeking an experienced and accomplished library professional to serve as Director of the Falmouth Public Library, which includes the Main Library and the North and East Falmouth branches. The successful candidate will be a forward-thinking, collaborative, and engaging leader who is adept at planning and managing library operations under the general direction and governance of the Board of Library Trustees and the administrative direction of the Town Manager. The ideal candidate will bring strong communication and interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and a demonstrated ability to develop and support employees, lead organizational growth and change, build productive relationships, and foster a staff culture grounded in mutual respect, collaboration, accountability, and excellent public service.

The Library Director provides overall leadership and management of the Library's resources, programs, services, facilities, finances, and employees. Key responsibilities include annual and capital budgeting; financial management and procurement; personnel management and staff development; facilities management and planning; strategic and long-range planning; collection development; community engagement; and evaluation of Library programs and services. The Director develops and recommends policies to the Board of Library Trustees, implements policies as adopted, and ensures adherence to applicable policies and requirements. The next Director will also have an important leadership role in the development of a new East Falmouth Library branch as this significant capital project advances.

The Library Director manages a staff of more than 30 employees in collaboration with the Assistant Library Director and develops productive relationships with employees, Trustees, Town officials and departments, community organizations, and patrons. The Director also leads the Library's participation in the Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing (CLAMS) Network, pursues public relations and outside funding opportunities, and serves as the Library's liaison to the Falmouth Public Library Support Fund's Board of Directors and the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in library science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in public library administration, including supervisory and management experience.

Applicants must possess or be eligible to obtain a Professional Certificate of Librarianship from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC). Candidates must have demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of public library administration, personnel management and staff development, budgeting and financial management, collection development, strategic and long-range planning, facilities management, and community engagement. Experience with capital planning, facility development, renovation, or construction projects is desirable.

The position requires attendance at evening meetings and occasional work outside regular business hours to address operational needs or emergency situations.

Anticipated Starting Salary: $113,817.60/year (Step 1) – $139,110.40/year (Step 7) of the 10-step salary table, commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual step advancement.

The Town has completed the project's planning and design phase through the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program, and the project is becoming eligible for construction funding in FY27. The next Director will have the opportunity to help guide this significant community investment as the project advances toward construction.
