Library Page, Jacob Edwards Library (Southbridge)

Position Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to perform basic library services and clerical work in the Library.   Performs all other related work as required.  

Essential Functions:

§  Shelves library materials and maintains proper order and appearance of the collection.

§  Provides excellent customer service.

§  Brings the mail to Town Hall.

§  Assists librarians to maintain library displays and bulletin boards.

§  Assists in the taking of the inventory of library materials as required.

§  Maintains currency of newspaper collection.

§  Waters plants.

§  Sets up for various events.

§  Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Requires some high school courses; three to six months’ experience in customer service or retail preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge:   Entry level position designed for High School student.

Ability:     Ability to interact in a positive and effective manner with employees and public and to work independently. Ability to speak clearly.  Ability to alphabetize maintain shelf order.  Ability to work effectively both independently and with others as required.  Ability to execute oral and written instructions in a precise manner.   Ability to operate a variety of office equipment and to understand and use office computer software.   Ability to do repetitive work.  Ability to manage multiple tasks in a prompt, efficient manner.

Skill:  Excellent oral communication and customer service skills.

Operates objects, tools, or controls; picks up paper, files and other common office objects.  .   May move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to communicate effectively. 

Supervision:

Supervision Scope: Performs routine work 

Supervision Received:  Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor or in his/her absence, by the Circulation Assistant on duty.  

Supervision Given: None.

Job Environment:

§  Work is performed under typical office and library conditions; the noise level is moderately noisy. Library hours may require evening and weekend work. 

§  Operates technology, library and office equipment.

§  Employee has frequent contact with the public and library staff.  Contacts are primarily in person, by telephone

§  Errors could result in monetary loss, reduced levels of service, and adverse public relations.
