Young Adult/Reference Librarian, Ipswich Public Library (Ipswich)

Under the general supervision of the Library Director and Assistant Library Director, this position has complete responsibility for programming and collection development for Young Adults and provides direct service to all patrons of the Reference Department.

Essential Functions:

● Select, purchase, and curate the collection of adult reference materials.
● Assist and instruct patrons on the use of online databases and research resources.
● Create displays, book lists, and publicity to increase public awareness of library collections and resources.
● Instruct public in use of technology, devices, and other equipment both individually and in groups.
● Utilize regional and statewide databases and other electronic resources to enhance collection.
● Actively study new development of reference-related services in libraries.
● Act as point of contact for InterLibrary Loan accounts.

● Perform readers' advisory services for adults and young adults.
● Select, purchase, and curate the young adult collection of materials.
● Manage young adult programming budget.
● Assist and instruct young adults in the use of library resources.
● Plan, implement, publicize, and evaluate programs to encourage young adult use of the library.
● Maintain an orderly and welcoming atmosphere in a public space used by a variety of people with different needs and expectations.
● Collaborate with the Youth Services Librarian on programming and collections for tweens.
● Maintain contact with the middle and high school programs.
● Participate in planning, executing, and publicizing adult programs, including lectures and book clubs.
● Routinely function as daily, evening, or weekend Building Supervisor, having first-response responsibility for the staff, the public and the facility.

Other Responsibilities:

● Responsible for providing interlibrary loan services to the public and other libraries.
● Attend professional meetings, workshops, conferences, and training sessions.
● May be asked to speak before groups within or outside the library about the library's programs and services.
● Troubleshoot PCs and other equipment.
● May contribute to the selection of adult circulating materials.
● Contribute to social media and other marketing activities, at the direction of the Assistant Library Director.
● Work in other departments as needed.
● Perform other related duties as assigned.
● Must work one evening per week and one Saturday in a 3-week rotation.

Qualifications

A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited graduate library school of recognized standing, as well as two to five years’ experience in public library service with relevant experience serving young adults. 

Possess a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.

Extensive knowledge of general library technology products, including but not limited to the internet, online databases, and automated library systems.

Ability to use new technologies, mobile devices and social networking tools to communicate with library customers and colleagues.

Good knowledge of professional library principles, methods, techniques and procedures. Familiarity with young adult literature and current practices in library services to young adults.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written direction.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and in a team environment.

Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in library programming for young adults.
