Library Director – Department Head Level Position
The Levi Heywood Memorial Library Association is seeking a dynamic and experienced Library Director to lead the Library in Gardner, Massachusetts. Reporting to the Board of Trustees with direction from the Mayor and City Council, this Department Head-level position will oversee all aspects of library services, operations, budgeting, planning, and personnel management.
The Library Director will be responsible for developing and executing library policies and programs as approved by the Board of Trustees, supervising daily operations, managing library staff, and ensuring the effective delivery of services to the community. This includes administering the library budget, coordinating capital expenditures, and managing both City and State funding sources. The Director will also lead the preparation of the annual budget, supervise the financial management of library resources, and collaborate with external auditors.
In this role, the Director will work closely with the Assistant Director to oversee staff training, manage technology-related functions, and implement marketing strategies across the library’s website and social media platforms. Additionally, the Director will manage the physical assets of the Library, ensure preventative maintenance, and maintain compliance with insurance and service contracts.
The position requires attending all Board of Trustees meetings, managing memorial donations, and representing the Library in City meetings and professional development opportunities. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.

• Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing. Must be able to communicate effectively with employees, the general public, as well as with other City and Commonwealth officials. • User knowledge of personal computers and Window-based software programs including Word and Excel; able to operate a variety of office equipment; familiarity or willingness to learn QuickBooks. • Ability to maintain detailed and complete and accurate records for the Library Association. • Thorough knowledge of professional library principals, methods, and practices. • Adaptability, initiative, energy, tact, courtesy, patience, and the ability to exercise good judgment.
Special Requirements
• Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school. • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in professional library work including 3 years of administrative and supervisory work at a public or private library. • Demonstrated knowledge of automated information data and retrieval systems, as well as familiarity with C/WMARS, Evergreen software, or an equivalent consortium and automated circulation system.
