Professional Reference Librarian-Part Time Weekends, Wayland Free Public Library (Wayland)

The Wayland Free Public Library seeks energetic candidates for a part-time weekend Professional Reference Librarian.  Provides research and information services to patrons.  At least one weekend shift per month.  Additional shifts possible, including weekdays and evenings.  Must be willing to cover other shifts on short notice.

Provides direct assistance to patrons with information regarding use of library materials, equipment and services.  Uses a variety of computer databases, electronic resources and computer software packages.  Circulates library materials.  Completes special projects and tasks.  Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director or Director.

The ideal candidate must be well-organized and detail-oriented.  Ability to adapt to new technologies and services is a must.

Supervised by the Assistant Director and/or Director.  Must be comfortable working independently without supervision evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution.  Will consider candidates who are working towards a graduate degree in Library Science.

Experience: At least one (1) year experience working in a library performing reference activities.

Computer literacy is a must.  Good working knowledge of the library's print collections, accessible databases, and general literature holdings and standard library procedures and policies.

Ability to stay calm and perform several tasks at once.  Must be able to search various databases and use the internet.  Ability to deal with change and cope with the continuing flow of new developments in library automation.  Communicates well orally and in writing.  Demonstrates skills in organizing library materials and workflow.  Must work well with all age groups.

Physical requirements: Occasional light physical effort required to perform duties under typical library conditions.  Occasionally required to lift items and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds and to kneel, bend, stoop, crouch and twist.  Must have manual dexterity to operate, maintain and repair a variety of computer related equipment.  Ability to sit for periods of time, and to talk and listen.
