The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) is pleased to announce that Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman is the featured player for the 2025 Statewide Summer Library Program, "When You Read, You Score!" This summer Swayman will be featured on the annual READ poster available at public libraries across the Commonwealth. Swayman became the No.1 goaltender last year and has been defending the net with the Boston Bruins for eight years.
"We really appreciate the Bruins' support," said a public librarian. "We have been recipients of a Bruins visit, and it is a really awesome opportunity and a chance to engage new visitors to the library."
Every summer Bruins mascot Blades travels across the Commonwealth to visit public libraries of all sizes. 13 libraries will receive a visit from Blades this summer, beginning with a kickoff event at Woburn Public Library. The other 12 libraries Blades is scheduled to visit include: Attleboro Public Library, Sturgis Library in Barnstable, Wareham Free Library, Nevins Library in Methuen, Russell Public Library, Hadley Public Library, Sherborn Library, Thayer Memorial Library in Lancaster, Lunenberg Public Library, Charlton Public Library, New Bedford Free Public Library and Fall River Public Library.
More than 157,000 children, teens and adults participated in statewide summer reading programs in partnership with the Boston Bruins last summer. Since the Boston Bruins partnership with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) began in 2009, there have been 158 library visits with Boston Bruins mascot Blades to 110 municipalities to promote literacy and encourage kids and teens to keep reading over the summer. Participants in the summer library program are eligible for prizes that include Swayman signed photos, hockey pucks and jerseys, as well as grand prize tickets to Bruins games and high five experiences at TD Garden.
The Statewide Summer Library Program with the Boston Bruins is free to all public libraries and residents in the Commonwealth and is partially federally funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Though President Trump signed an executive order calling for funding cuts to IMLS, the Statewide Summer Library Program can continue this year thanks to increased support from the Boston Bruins. The Summer Reading Library Program is also supported each year by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and the Massachusetts Library System.
