The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) is delighted to announce the launch of Careers in Libraries, a new collection of video stories featuring diverse library staff from across the Commonwealth. These brief videos highlight the different career possibilities in libraries, the passionate people working in libraries, and the many ways libraries serve as vital community spaces. The videos can be viewed online at: libraries.state.ma.us/careers-in-libraries
"We are thrilled to share these inspiring stories and showcase the amazing people who make our libraries thrive," said Maureen Amyot, Director at the MBLC. "We hope these videos will inspire individuals from all backgrounds, especially underrepresented groups, to explore the possibility of a fulfilling career in libraries and help us build a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve."
The Careers in Libraries videos consist of interviews with current library staff working in Massachusetts, capturing their diverse backgrounds and wide-ranging areas of expertise. They share their personal career journeys, discuss the unique challenges and rewards of their work, and explain why they are passionate about serving their communities. The videos also offer an authentic glimpse into the dynamic and evolving world of libraries. Librarians and library workers are invited to share their own journey to working in libraries on social media using the hashtag #MyLibraryCareer and tagging the MBLC at @mblclibraries. Select videos will be featured as part of the MBLC's Careers in Libraries campaign.
Now more than ever, people are turning to libraries for free resources, connection, and personal growth. Libraries serve as a "third space"—a welcoming environment beyond home and work—where anyone can access technology, attend programs, explore new ideas, and build community. The Careers in Libraries video collection highlights the people who make this possible every day.
About MBLC
The Board of Library Commissioners (mass.gov/mblc) is the agency of state government with the statutory authority and responsibility to organize, develop, coordinate and improve library services throughout the Commonwealth. The Board advises municipalities and library trustees on the operation and maintenance of public libraries, including construction and renovation. It administers state and federal grant programs for libraries and promotes cooperation among all types of libraries through regional library systems and automated resource sharing. It also works to ensure that all residents of the Commonwealth, regardless of their geographic location, social or economic status, age, level of physical or intellectual ability or cultural background, have access to essential new electronic information technologies and significant electronic databases.
