The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners' (MBLC) Head of Library Advisory and Government Liaison Rob Favini announced his retirement after eight years of service. Mr. Favini joined the MBLC in 2018 and has since played an important role in supporting statewide library programs and services that benefit communities across the Commonwealth.

"It has been an honor to be a member of the MBLC and to have had the opportunity to serve and support Massachusetts libraries. The library community's dedication, creativity, intelligence, and bravery never cease to amaze me. I'd also like to thank the team that I've had the privilege to lead for their amazing work, and the entire MBLC staff for the support and friendship that they have given me," said Favini.

At the MBLC, Mr. Favini led the Library and Advisory Development team tasked with a wide range of statewide initiatives, support services and grant programs. The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grants administered through the MBLC's Library Advisory team provide funding for local libraries to address community needs ranging from early literacy, preserving history collections, workforce development, as well as English language learning and citizenship classes. Mr. Favini has also worked closely with library staff, Trustees, Friends and foundation groups, and various library partners on issues including open meeting law, book banning and book challenges, first amendment audits, and fundraising for library construction projects.

"Rob's work at the MBLC reflects a deep commitment to Massachusetts libraries and the people they serve. Many librarians and trustees have come to depend on his expertise with library policy and procedure to help them navigate through challenges. Libraries across the commonwealth are stronger today because of his efforts," said MBLC Chair Vicky Biancolo.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, Mr. Favini's leadership guided libraries through an unprecedented time by providing critical updates. He worked with MBLC staff to create grant opportunities with federal ARPA funds to help libraries provide services during the pandemic and navigate closures, recovery and reopenings.

As the MBLC's Government Liaison, Mr. Favini amplified the impactful work of libraries to legislators and supported the Massachusetts Library Association's efforts to pass library legislation that addresses book bans and intellectual freedom challenges as well as eBook pricing. An Act Regarding Free Expression (S.2328 and H.3594) and An Act Addressing Challenges Facing Public Libraries and Digital Resource Collections (S.2330 and H.3595) both passed in the Massachusetts Senate this fall.
