Adult Literacy

Literacy programs at public libraries help adults improve their reading and writing skills so they can reach personal goals as workers, parents, and community members. Libraries provide a free, neutral atmosphere for learners and their families.

Tutoring & Instruction

  • New reader or instructional materials for both adult learners and tutors
  • One-on-one or small group classes with trained volunteers, allowing adults to learn at their own pace and achieve personal goals
  • Individual or small group classes and other resources for:
    • citizenship and the naturalization process
    • adult basic education
    • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
    • High School Equivalency (HiSet) exam prep
    • Space for literacy classes and tutor training

Spaces for Learning

  • Use of computers, laptops, and tablets for technology-assisted instruction

Programs for Children & Families

  • Support to parents and caregivers that focus on family literacy
  • Trained children's librarians offering story hours, lapsits, and parenting collections
  • Programs that focus on early learning and preparation for reading
