Library Director, Newport Public Library (Newport, RI)

Library Director, Newport (RI) Public Library: Seeking a creative, energetic, forward thinking, problem solver to lead this valued and respected public library. The Library Director serves as the Executive Officer of the Library.  The Library Director is responsible for the management and operation of the Library and its program of services in accordance with policies established by the Board of Trustees. The Library Director has ultimate authority in such areas as collection development, budget management, and personnel administration. MISSION AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The Newport Public Library seeks to strengthen the community by providing opportunities that support lifelong learning, encourage inspiration, imagination, and enjoyment, and connect people to each other and to the rest of the world. The Newport Public Library is a collaborative and welcoming workplace. All aspects of the Library are expertly maintained with pleasant working conditions. The work environment is typical of offices and there are routine disruptions during the workday. The Library Director is expected to remain focused on the position requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.       A Master of Library and Information Science Degree from an accredited program, as verified by the American Library Association.
2.       Minimum of three years public library administrative and supervisory experience.
3.       Demonstrated fund raising ability preferred.
4.       Knowledge of the operation of a 501(c)(3) organization desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The position of Library Director requires cognitive alertness and being aware of nearby activity.  Work effort principally involves sitting for long periods to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. There may be long hours of onscreen computer work. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such as books, office equipment, and computer paper (up to 30 lbs.).
Duties chiefly require mental exertion rather than physical labor, but the role may require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone system, computer manipulation of computers and other office equipment, typing, filing, and sorting.

HOURS:
37.5 hours per week, with reporting hours determined by the Board of Trustees in consultation with the successful candidate.  Salary range: $86,000 - $95,000 plus a generous benefits package.
