Substitute Youth Librarian, Watertown Free Public Library (Watertown)

The Watertown Free Public Library is in search of a librarian or librarian-in-training to join our team. This position is heavy on youth-focused customer service working on the children’s or teen public service desk offering reader’s advisory, answering phones, and assisting young patrons and their caregivers. Both departments are located discrete rooms on the first floor with a service desk staffed by one or two librarians. This position is best suited to someone comfortable working independently and confident making well-informed judgment calls.

We welcome library school students, new graduates, and experienced librarians for this position; it’s not necessary that you’ve worked in a public library before as long as you believe in and want to be a part of the important work that public libraries do. Previous experience working with youth is required and non-negotiable.  Interest in also working in the adult Reference Department is desirable. Those who are bilingual/multilingual or from an immigrant background are strongly encouraged to apply.

This is an on-call position, hours are given as needed. Most shifts are scheduled 2-4 weeks in advance with occasional short notice needs. The most frequently needed shifts are weeknights from 5 pm-9 pm or 6pm – 9pm. There are occasional needs for weekend shifts, most often Saturdays 9 am-5 pm and Sundays from 1 pm-5 pm.  Sundays are paid at 1.5 times regular pay.

The City of Watertown is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
