Senior Public Services Librarian, Peabody Institute Library (Peabody)
RESPONSIBILITIES: Reports to the Assistant Library Director and Library Director. Responsible for all primary functions of the Public Services Department at a busy public library, including reference, reader’s advisory and circulation services; participates in the hiring of assigned personnel; supervises public service desk staff; trains all staff on circulation procedures; responds to basic and advanced reference inquiries; plans and implements public technology education programs; performs collection development responsibilities assigned by Director or Assistant Director. Represents the Library in professional organizations such as NOBLE; must maintain and develop professional skills.
Public Service Responsibilities
● Provides circulation, reference and readers’ advisory services to patrons at the Public Services Desk.
● Answers advanced reference inquiries referred by other staff.
● Assists patrons with library technology; troubleshoots hardware, software and network problems.
● Demonstrates a high level of expertise in circulation rules (NOBLE knowledge and experience preferred) and the ability to describe and explain to patrons and staff alike.
● Ensures that circulation, reference, and technological aspects of the Public Services Desk run smoothly.
● Responsible for submitting and managing all COMCAT and WORLDCAT transactions.
● Devises workflow improvements to improve patron experience and staff competency.
Collection Development and Management
● Responsible for the development and management of library database collection.
● Coordinates the development of, updates, and researches new electronic resources and evaluates efficacy of old technology with the Senior Technology Librarian.
● Manages collection of Library computer technology (Chromebooks, Hotspots, etc).
● Keeps extensive statistics relevant to the public services department and submits ARIS statistics to the Assistant Director.
Public Programs and Instruction
● Develops and conducts or coordinates technology classes for the public based on community need and interest, including drop-in technology help sessions, and the use of electronic resources such as Internet training, e-books, Microsoft products, GSuite, online applications and personal devices.
● Manages Library volunteer program.
Public Service Desk Supervision
● Serves as primary point of reference for all staff and patron Public Services policy, procedure, Evergreen, Assabet, and circulation inquiries throughout all three Library locations.
● Able to interpret, explain, and enforce all Public Services policies and procedures to staff and patrons.
● Participates in hiring staff assigned to the Public Service Desk.
● Provides initial and extensive training of all new hires to ensure that the Library’s mission is followed, and that customer service is consistently exceptional across all three locations.
● Develops a comprehensive Public Services training program for all Library staff.
● Develops and implements departmental goals and objectives as aligned with the Library’s Strategic Plan.
● Supervises assigned personnel, including identifying and providing supplemental training as needed, and assigning and supervising areas of responsibility and secondary duties.
Qualifications
This position requires an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution. Candidates who are currently enrolled in such a program, who have demonstrated progress toward MLS degree, may be considered. Successful candidates will have at least two years relevant experience that includes outstanding technology, instruction and public service skills, and experience supervising others. Schedule includes one evening per week, and every other Saturday.
