Director of Exhibits and Collections, Wellesley Historical Society (Wellesley)

The Wellesley Historical Society is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and driven professional to serve as the Director of Exhibits and Collections. 

The Director of Exhibits and Collections will be responsible for exhibit research and design as well as the management of the Society’s wide-ranging collections. Ideal candidates will work with Executive Director to design and implement educational programming and community engagement.

The Wellesley Historical Society is preparing to open their new facility, The Wellesley History & Exhibit Center in September of 2025. The Wellesley History Center contains four galleries spread over the first floor. The Director of Exhibits and Collections will be responsible for all stages of developing and installing two to three exhibits annually to utilize these galleries and engage the Wellesley community.

Wellesley Historical Society’s holdings contain a wide-range of materials, including archives, photographs, textiles, object, entomology, and art. The Director of Exhibits and Collections will be responsible for maintaining physical and intellectual control of the existing collections as well as on-going accessions. Along with the Executive Director, the Director of Exhibits and Collections will respond to research inquires, support other Society educational programming, and staff the Wellesley History Center.

This position reports to, and is supported by, Wellesley Historical Society’s Executive Director.

Part-time at 16-24 hours per week, in-person, with occasional nights and weekend hours. Paid vacation.

Qualifications

Required qualifications 

·       Graduate training in museum studies, archival management, or public history;

·       Graduate level experience conducting historical research;

·       Work experience in a museum environment;

·       Knowledge of best practices for handling collection items

·       Proficiency with computer software and databases;

·       Attention to detail; ability to record information accurately and completely;

·       Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of constituents

·       Comfortable with and enthusiastic about engaging the community and interfacing with the public



Preferred qualifications 

·       Experience working with a wide range of materials including photographs, textiles, and artwork.

·       Familiarity with current collection management and preservation best practices

·       Prior experience developing interpretative materials

·       Prior research/reference support experience

·       Experience with integrated pest management

·       Familiarity with PastPerfect
