Technology Resource Specialist, Abbot Public Library (Marblehead)

Are you a tech-savvy creative with a passion for teaching and tinkering? Do you dream of building a cutting-edge makerspace and shaping a library's future? Abbot Public Library in the beautiful, historic town of Marblehead, MA, reopened in July 2024 after a major renovation and is seeking a dynamic Technology Resource Specialist to lead our technological evolution. This isn't your typical library job—you'll be instrumental in launching and managing our brand-new, dedicated makerspace, turning ideas into reality for our community.

The Opportunity:  Under the supervision of the Director and the Technical Services Supervisor, you'll provide essential technical support for both library patrons and staff while becoming the driving force behind all our technology-related makerspace programs. If you love variety, your week will involve everything from teaching 3D printing to troubleshooting network issues, and from managing our periodicals collection to assisting at the circulation desk.

Core Duties & Responsibilities - Build, Teach, Support: You'll be a key player in ensuring technology and creativity thrive at the library.

Lead the Makerspace: Develop, lead, and promote hands-on workshops and classes for all ages—covering exciting topics like 3D printing, laser cutting, design software, die-cutting, and sewing.

Tech Support & Training: Provide expert, friendly, one-on-one and group guidance to patrons and staff, ensuring the safe and effective use of all library technology and makerspace equipment.

Equipment Management: Keep our technology running smoothly! Perform regular maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on all makerspace hardware. Manage inventories and track usage.

Future Forward: Stay current with new technology and trends in the maker movement, making informed recommendations for new equipment, software, and materials to acquire.

Collection Management: Manage the library’s periodicals collection, including print and electronic resources, ensuring the collection is current and complete.

Customer Service: Perform all circulation desk duties, delivering excellent customer service as a key part of our front-line team.

Qualifications

Technical Proficiency: Expertise in operating and troubleshooting a wide array of makerspace tools (3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, electronics, etc.).

Creative Mindset: A true passion for hands-on creation and the ability to think creatively about developing new programs and services.

Instructional Skills: The ability to teach complex technologies simply and engagingly to diverse audiences.

Adaptability: Eagerness to continuously learn and teach new technologies as the field evolves.

Experience and Education: A bachelor's degree in a related field (education, computer science, or engineering) and one to three years of experience. Experience in a makerspace is highly desirable.

Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to serve both staff and the public.
