Part Time Professional Librarian, Winchester Public Library (Winchester)
GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Department Head, perform a variety of duties providing information and assistance to patrons. Specific duties are divided among the three areas of responsibility: information services, children’s services and technology specialist.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Regularly scheduled on the Reference Desk to advise and assist patrons in selecting, locating, and using library materials through the knowledge of print materials, the on-line library catalog, electronic resources and the internet.
· Advise patrons in the use of computer applications, portable devices, and downloading of electronic library materials.
· Provide individual instruction as well as scheduled classes and conduct tours of the library for students and others, when requested.
· Advise and assist patrons in the use of library equipment such as printers, fax machines, photo copying and scanning, and assistive equipment such as print enlarging equipment for the visually impaired, assistive hearing devices, and audio and video equipment for special events.
· Understand library and network policies and procedures and interpret and enforce such policies and procedures including State and Federal laws that govern the use of library materials, including the confidentiality of patron records and requests for information.
· Act as Department Head in her/her absence and may serve as Librarian-in-Charge at times of reduced staffing levels, typically weekends or holiday periods.
· Perform routine troubleshooting of computer hardware, software, and peripherals; troubleshoot other equipment such as microfilm machines, photocopiers, audio-visual equipment, fax machines and scanners.
· Perform collection development functions of selecting and weeding for the collections as a member of the Collection Development Committee, when required.
· Participate in the development of a variety of programs working cooperatively with community organizations, businesses and local government agencies to fulfill the library’s role as a community center and information provider.
· Attend meetings and other continuing educational opportunities to keep current on professional development; participate in interest groups, committees, or training sessions sponsored by the Minuteman Library Network.
· Includes evening or weekend hours, as required.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Information Services Librarian
· Assist in the collection development of the reference collection, both print and non-print, if required.
· Responsible for the processing of all interlibrary loan requests, including verification of titles, sending requests electronically, processing incoming and outgoing materials. Work requires a thorough knowledge of electronic database searching, standard interlibrary loan policies and procedures and familiarity with local and regional resources in public, academic, and special libraries.
· Regularly scheduled at the Reference Desk.
· May cover hours on the reference desk in the Children’s Room when needed.
Qualifications
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Some supervision and training of substitute librarians, aides, pages and volunteers in specific department operations, as required.
INDEPENDENT ACTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY: Under the general supervision of a Department Head, perform independently within the broad scope of library policies and procedures; errors could result in loss of confidence by the general public and adverse public relations for the town.
COMPETENCIES:
· Dewey Decimal System for locating materials
· Attention to detail
· Ability to multi-task at a busy public service desk
· Ability to deal calmly with stressful situations, including those involving belligerent or difficult patrons
· Electronic devices and the internet
· Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills essential
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Ability to operate a keyboard and view a computer monitor on a regular basis
· Ability to reach for items on high and low shelves, as required
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
· Substantial lifting and carrying of library materials (up to 50 pounds) and moving equipment, included bookcarts (170 pounds)

This position is 15 hrs per week: Mon and Thurs evenings and every third Saturday from 9:30am-5:30pm. Other hours TBD.
