Head of Library Advisory/Government Liaison, MBLC (Boston)

The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) seeks an experienced library professional to join our agency as the Head of Library Advisory and Development/Government Liaison. This is an opportunity to be part of a talented and dynamic team of professionals who support library services across the Commonwealth.

This position reports to the Director of the Board of Library Commissioners, supervises a team of Library and Advisory Development staff and consultants, and oversees the MBLC’s federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program. The Head of Library Advisory and Development is a member of the agency’s management team, provides advisory services to public library directors, trustees, and friends; and serves as program manager for the agency’s electronic content services, including statewide databases and support for the state’s nine automated networks. The person in this role also works as the agency’s Government Liaison, establishing and maintaining relationships with elected officials in Boston and Washington DC.

Qualifications

Applicant must have at least:

A) five years of full-time or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in library administration

B) of which at least three years must have been in a managerial or supervisory capacity; or

C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below: 

I.             A Master’s degree with a major in Library Science may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*

II.           A completed Doctorate or course work completed and a dissertation in progress with a major in library science, public administration, or a related discipline may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.

*Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
