Bookmobile & Outreach Librarian I, Waltham Public Library (Waltham)
The Waltham Public Library wants to be the best public library in the world and that’s what sets us apart when we’re adding to our team. Waltham is a diverse city with a mixed socio-economic group of about 65,000 residents. We have a growing population of families with young children, 12% of our population are teens and 40% of our residents speak a language other than English at home. We’re seeking a friendly, adaptive, enthusiastic, service-oriented individual to help serve an urban community within a busy library setting. We're looking for someone who is self-motivated, cares about accuracy, and can handle stressful situations with grace and good humor. Customer service experience is highly valued.
Duties include: Coordinating Bookmobile visits throughout the City. Outreach to Waltham organizations, including home delivery. Serving the community by locating materials and information via all print and electronic resources, in person, and on the telephone. Reference Desk duties such as answering telephones, checking items in and out, registering patrons, maintaining patron accounts and other general public service desk duties as assigned. Assisting patrons in troubleshooting personal computers and various other types of electronic equipment. Responding to patrons’ questions and concerns. Interpreting and enforcing library policies. Participating in Minuteman group(s) and other professional development workshops. Referring patrons to other departments and institutions as appropriate. Perform other duties at the discretion of supervisors.
Qualifications
ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science; more than 1 year computer/electronic database experience; 5 years’ professional library experience, preferably with a history of outreach and/or bookmobile service, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Driver’s License. Superior customer service. Strong interest in outreach and social media. Skill with graphic print design. Experience with marketing and outreach. Comfort and confidence in all matters of technology. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library work. Ability to work with library staff and a diverse general public in a constructive and welcoming manner. Ability to perform under pressure and resolve problems, including handling emergencies. Excellent communication and instructional abilities. Extreme creativity. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Must pass a pre-employment physical with drug and alcohol screening, a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI), and a background check. The selected candidate will be required to submit three written and signed letters of reference within one week of accepting a conditional offer. Letters may not be dated older than two years. Preferred: Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Chinese, or Portuguese; social media skills; facility with basic graphic, print, and/or web design; experience with marketing and outreach; Familiarity with III Sierra software, Microsoft Office & Google Workspace. Familiarity with Canva, Hootsuite, Constant Contact or similar platforms.
