Library Director, Goshen Free Library (Goshen)
The Board of Trustees of the Goshen Free Library seeks a Library Director.
The Director of the Goshen Free Library is a full-service librarian, responsible for creating a welcoming, engaging presence for a positive social experience as the main face of the library. Daily operations and management of the Library and its program of services in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Board of Library Trustees. The Director works in close cooperation with the Board, serving as its advisor and as an active participant in policy and budget development, goal-setting, planning, and evaluation. The Board delegates to the director a substantial measure of authority to develop the collection, to manage the Library’s budget, and to select and supervise volunteers and subordinate personnel. The position is directly accountable to the Board of Library Trustees. There will be a probation period; a more detailed job description is available on request.
The role is 19 hours a week.

Principal Duties
- Open, close and operate the library in person during open hours
- Manage the library budget including preparation of monthly warrants
- Submit payroll and keeping close track of use of the budget
- Order new items for the collection
- Submit donations to the appropriate account
- Submit invoices for purchases or reimbursement
- Manage the Library Collection and resources
- Select new materials for the library suitable for all ages, and in a range of print and non-print formats
- Weed out library materials according to several criteria, including historical value, circulation, and appropriate value
- Maintain children’s, young adult, and adult collections
- Implement and maintain interlibrary loans and computer services.
- Hire, train, and supervise back-up assistants where appropriate
- Create a welcoming, engaging presence for a positive experience as the face of the library
- Create and maintain regular programming on a limited budget
- Recruit, train and supervise library volunteers.
- Direct library programs and otherwise promote the use of the library by town residents (including publicity arranged by volunteers or other staff).
- Work with the local school and the town Council on Aging for community outreach.
- Work with town officers to determine space availability for programs because we are in a shared building
- Create and distribute promotional communications such as newsletters, social media posts, local publication submissions, and printed flyers
- Collect patron usage, circulation, and holdings statistics and other appropriate records for the use of the town and the Commonwealth
- Prepare and submit the ARIS report for the state and provision of information for the annual town report
- Prepare reports required by the state, and monthly director’s reports for trustees and other town officials
- Advise library trustees regarding library matters and attending monthly trustee meetings.
- Attending informational meetings or town events as the face of the library.
- Create and oversee fundraising such as managing an ongoing book sale and seasonal efforts

Qualifications
a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree; or a bachelor’s degree, and current or eventual completion of State Certificate of Librarianship
A Massachusetts background CORI check is required of all employed staff members.

Ability to speak and write effectively and clearly
Computer literacy, including word processing, email, use of MLS databases, and use of spreadsheets
Leadership abilities and a high degree of initiative, motivation, initiative and resourcefulness
Physical and mental capacities sufficient to operate and manage the library
Intellectual curiosity and an appreciation of libraries
General knowledge of library principles and practices

The library director's salary is set to its FY2026 value plus a 3% cost of living increase for FY2027
