Senior Library Assistant, Hopkinton Public Library (Hopkinton)

The position performs administrative and clerical work in support of the daily operations of the Library while providing customer service to patrons, requires tact and discretion working in a flexible work environment; may perform moderately complex administrative duties; performs all other related work as required.

Essential Functions

Perform Front Desk duties such as sorting daily deliveries; checking items in and out; issuing new library cards; answering directional questions, informing patrons of library services, sorting mail and daily package deliveries, and shelving materials in a timely manner. Opens and closes the Library when scheduled and performs all associated tasks.

Performs advanced circulation duties and all associated tasks, such as assisting patrons with overdue or damaged materials, providing audits of library materials as required, receive CW/MARS bins with patrons' requests, prepare Inter-Library Loan (ILL) materials for patrons, pull hold requests for ILL, notify patrons of materials for pick-up, return all ILL materials to lending libraries, place holds for patrons, look up materials in CW/MARS catalog to check availability.


Processes new materials including covering books and applying spine labels.

Provides support for programs such as room arrangement, assistance with promotion, or performer/patron assistance before/during/after library programs. May arrange seasonal displays; arrange new book displays, and provide support for Library and town book clubs. Supports programs and Summer Reading initiatives within the library, with other Town departments, and library supporting non-profits.


Assists patrons with Museum passes including reserving and checking out. Resolve museum pass conflicts and monitor status for outstanding passes.
May performs similar or related work as required, or as the situation dictates, at various service locations throughout the library to include, but not limited to, the following service desks: Children’s, Reference, Young Adult, and/or CreatorSpace.

Works under the general supervision of the Circulation & Technical Services Supervisor . Functions independently, referring problems to supervisor only when clarification or interpretation of policy or procedure is required.


Exercises judgment and initiative to perform duties, complete assigned tasks, and analyze the facts or circumstances surrounding individual problems.

Qualifications

High School equivalency; Associates Degree or some additional library course work desired. Three (3) or more years of relevant customer service experience within a public library system preferred, and/or any combination of equivalent education, training and experience.
Knowledge of: public library principles and practices; customer service knowledge; research involving the internet and library databases. Experience with Google Suite and Evergreen ILS preferred.
Ability to: communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences including public officials and the general public; handle multiple tasks, determine priorities and meet deadlines; maintain accurate and detailed records; maintain knowledge and skill in utilizing software programs; recognize Library priorities and work cooperatively and collaboratively to support their accomplishment.
Skill: organizational, writing, interpersonal/collaborative communication, resourcefulness and discretion; computer skills that encompass effective use of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, email, social media, internet browser and library software.

Job Environment
● Work is performed under typical library conditions; the noise level is moderate.
● Library hours include evening and weekend work.
● Operates computer, printers, copier, scanner, and other standard office and library equipment.
● Has contact with the general public and other library staff, requiring a high level of courtesy and patience.
● Select information is subject to public disclosure.
● Errors could result in reduced levels of service, poor public relations and minor monetary loss.

Physical Requirements
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Moderate physical effort required; may be required to move/push/transport up to 40 pounds. Ability to reach and shelve books. Position requires the ability to operate a keyboard and general office equipment at efficient speed and view computer screens for an extended period of time. The employee is frequently required to convey information at meetings with staff and others. Regular on site attendance is required of this position given the nature of the work required.

Hours: 19 hours per week


Scheduled Hours:

Sunday: 11:30 AM – 4:00 PM; Monday: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM; Thursday: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM;

and Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM


Additional hours may be available to cover open shifts when substitutes are unavailable.
