Community Librarian, Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library (Gloucester)

Gloucester, a beautiful small city with 30,000 residents on Cape Ann and one of the oldest in the commonwealth, is celebrating its 400th in 2023. It is defined by its relationship to the sea, its long history of arts and innovation, and the diversity of culture and economic status represented by natives and newcomers. The library is centrally located in the heart of the downtown.

Our Community Librarian is responsible for reaching out, engaging, and overseeing the provision of library services to people who are less well served by our current programs, services, and collections, e.g. tweens, teens, young professionals, immigrants, people who are disabled, people who are struggling to meet their basic needs. The work will involve forging collaborative partnerships with the Gloucester Public Schools, Council on Aging, and various social service organizations as well as finding effective ways to connect with individuals who are not regular library users. The FY20-24 strategic plan and the FY20 action plan state the goals of the library and the expectations for the Community Librarian.

In addition the Community Librarian will be part of our wonderful, supportive, professional team sharing the following responsibilities:

Works under the general supervision of the Assistant Library Director.  Responsible for library services for adults and teens including research, nonfiction collections, programs, marketing and communications, and technology. Responsible for a library service area.

Duties:

• Develops and implements library goals through the creation of programs, informational material, and collection development
● Trains public and other staff members in the use of technology and software.
● Interfaces with third party vendors providing library services.
● Develops and maintains collections, including meeting budgetary requirements.
● Represents library at consortium meetings and professional events.
● Ensures implementation of consortium and state library system policies and procedures.
• Supports library users to meet their needs. Specifically provides professional research services to information seekers.
• Curates the adult nonfiction collection in all formats including selecting, cataloging, deaccessioning.
• Creates annotated guides to authoritative information on common topics.
• Manages library technology used by the public.
• Maintains and provides access to local history collections and information.
• Develops remotely accessible library services.
• Performs outreach activities and supports collaborative relationships.
• Prepares monthly reports.
• Stays informed on public library issues, trends, and best practices.
• Performs special projects and tasks as assigned by Assistant Library Director.

Qualifications

• Masters in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school required.
• Knowledge of the Integrated Library System software.
• Knowledge of computers, operating systems, and other technology equipment; ability to perform basic tasks and troubleshooting such as installing software, resolving printing issues, etc.
• Knowledge of specialized software such as e-mail services, social media interfaces, web content management software, etc.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the methods, practices, principles and procedures of professional public library work, especially in the service area of the position.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with others.
• Demonstrated customer service skills.
• Ability to self-direct and initiate.

Preferred Qualifications:
• One year of related employment.
• Experience with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest.
• Experience with WordPress.
• Fluency in Spanish.
• Experience with modern computer technologies and troubleshooting.
• Willingness to experiment.
