Reference Library Assistant for Children's Room, Holyoke Public Library (Holyoke)

The Holyoke Public Library seeks an applicant for a part time Reference Library Assistant to work with children. This employee will work 27 hours per week at the Holyoke Public Library Children’s Room under the guidance of the Assistant Library Director and Children's Librarian.

Working hours include regular evening shift, 3:30pm to 8:30pm Monday-Thursday in addition to working every other Saturday, 8:30am-4pm. Candidate must be able to interact with young customers, fellow library staff, vendors and employees in other City departments. Acting in coordination with the Children’s Librarian, this position will provide regular support in the Children’s Room on a weekly basis.  Working knowledge with children and family members necessary. Ability to learn new technology platforms, and knowledge of Evergreen, are preferred. Candidate must possess excellent customer service skills.


Associate’s Degree preferred. Library experience preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work and appropriate library services

Ability to work with customers of all ages, especially with children and young adults, and with staff in a friendly and efficient manner. Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule. Ability to perform routine clerical and record-keeping tasks, learn and use library automated system, and operate standard office equipment. Ability to speak Spanish helpful.

Excellent customer service skills; strong written and verbal communication and basic computer skills. Interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
