Substitute Librarian, Flint Public Library (Middleton)

Includes working the circulation desks on occasional evenings and rotating Sundays.  The ideal candidate has the flexibility to be on-call to fill shifts as needed, sometimes with short notice.


BS Degree preferred.  Experience with Symphony ILS preferred. Experience in a public library setting, knowledge of library collections, and processing library materials required. A genuine desire and ability to interact pleasantly and effectively with the public is essential. In addition, the candidate will be able to:

·         Work independently.

·         Handle a great many details, some simultaneously, with accuracy.

·         Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing.

·         Be flexible and work with patrons of all age groups.

·         Use pleasant and professional telephone etiquette.

·         Research information for a wide variety of library users.

Work pleasantly with other staff members in a supportive team atmosphere and enjoy working with the public

·         Perform work at the circulation desk including:

o   Check materials in and out

o   Issue library cards

o   Answer directional questions

o   Assist patrons with basic instructions on the use of the computer catalogs

o   Telephone patrons when reserve materials are received, assist patrons on the use of the photocopier

o   Collect fines and bill payments

o   Answer the telephone and forward calls to appropriate departments, as needed

·         Answer patron account and library logistics questions. Direct more complex inquiries to appropriate staff members.

·         Operate technology at and around the circulation desk, including computers, printers and copiers; instruct patrons in using public equipment, if needed

·         Check out and renew materials

·         Reserve and check out museum passes

·         Perform searches for materials in the library catalog

·         Place and file holds for patrons

·         Register new patrons

·         Discharge returns and reserves

·         Explain library policies and handle confidential information

·         Assist patrons in locating materials as needed

·         Help library pages with their responsibilities

·         Attend staff meetings and workshops

Employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and reach with hands and arms in physically picking up files, papers and other common office objects.   Employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds such as files, books, supplies, etc.  Ability to read small print and view/operate computer screens, office machines, computers, mobile devices and digital cameras.
