Library Director, BiblioTemps (Boston Architectural College) (Boston)

BiblioTemps® is an employment service of the Massachusetts Library System that provides experienced library workers for temporary placements in public, academic, and special libraries throughout Massachusetts.

Location:         Boston Architectural College Library

Position Type: Temporary

Start date:       As soon as possible

End date:        3-month placement

Schedule:       30 hours per week

Pay Rate:        $50.00 - $60.00 per hour

Position Summary: The Library Director is a temporary, 30 hours per week position responsible for the administrative and educational functions of the Library.  This position reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.



Primary Essential Functions:

•  Assume full management and leadership responsibility for all areas of the Library.

•  Manage the development and implementation of the BAC Library’s goals, policies, 
and priorities; establish appropriate service and staffing levels.

•  Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of library technical and public service procedures.

•  Work cooperatively with all BAC school staff to effectively achieve the School’s goals and mission.  

•  Maintain a helpful working relationship with other professionals, institutions, and organizations in the field of design.

•  Hire, train, manage, and evaluate Library personnel.  

•  Plan and manage Library budget.  Work with program directors and faculty members to coordinate the Library budget with program needs.

•  Set collection standards and policy for collection development.

  • Manages collection development and selection of material for Library, weeding, binding, and stack maintenance.
  • Oversee the acquisitions processing of all received materials and billing.
  • Oversee the creation of new book displays both in print and online.

•  Develop short-, mid-, and long-range planning.  Work with the Board’s Long Range Planning Committee and Education Committee in developing long-range plans.  The School’s mission is central to any planning.

•  Support Associate Director of the Library in development of IL program, its implementation and evaluation. Liaise with Education Directors and faculty members to integrate appropriate IL instruction into the curricula.

•  Develop and support the Memorial Library and Archives collections.  Serve as contact for historians and laypeople wishing to use Memorial Library.

•  Represent the Library and its needs within the BAC through membership on the Curriculum Committee and other task groups.

•  Advance the profession of design librarianship through involvement in professional organizations and contributions to the literature.

•  Plan for disaster situations, such as, water damage, fire, and mold infestations.

•  Prepare accurate reports for accrediting bodies and represent the Library during accreditation visits.

•  Supervise all library staff members and oversee their training.

•  Oversees the Library’s social media sites and determines content for social applications as needed.  Monitors trends for current and emerging social media platforms and makes recommendations on adoption of platforms.

•  Participates in special projects as needed. 

Qualifications

Team and Interpersonal Skills:  Success in this position requires proven ability to develop professional positive rapport with other team members including support staff and senior staff.  

Service Orientation: Success in this position requires a service-oriented perspective in which, to the greatest extent possible, students and other employees are treated in such a way as to feel valued and well served in their contacts with a professional representative of the BAC. 

Confidentiality and Discretion: Success in this position requires the ability not only to maintain the confidentiality of student and employee records, but also the ability to discern when it is appropriate to divulge privileged, if not necessarily confidential, information.

Educational Criteria: Earned Masters of Library Science degree from an accredited institution. 

Experience Requirements: Minimum of at least 7 years’ experience in library administration.
