Library Assistant for Youth Services, Joseph H. Plumb Memorial Library (Rochester)
The Town of Rochester is seeking candidates for a full-time (37.5 hours a week) Library Assistant for Youth Services at the Joseph H. Plumb Memorial Library. Primary responsibilities include providing and supporting library services for all youth, from birth to age 18. This position is also responsible for community outreach to families, schools, and local organizations that support youth in the Tri-Town area.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
· Develops, plans, coordinates, and runs all programs for children and young adults throughout the year, both inside the library building and out in the community.
· Answers reference questions and assists with research and homework assignments.
· Acts as a reader’s advisor for children, young adults, and their parents and guardians.
· Recommends children’s materials and resources.
· Performs community outreach on behalf of youth services and the library.
· Designs displays and exhibits, promotional materials, flyers, booklists, bibliographies, and social media posts of interest to children and young adults. Assists with the monthly newsletter.
· Acts as liaison with schools, daycares, and other groups in the community to promote library services and programs.
· Works with teachers on coordinating homework and research assignments.
· Meets with area youth services librarians to network and exchange ideas.
· Manages the library’s event calendar, budgets, reports, and statistics for youth programs.
· Engages in youth services professional development, including reading blogs, newsletters, and online discussion posts on youth services resources, programs, and readers advisory.
· Supervises one part-time staff and volunteers in the absence of the Library Director.
· Performs circulation and desk duties as needed. Instructs patrons in the use of the library’s physical and online resources.
· Assists with cataloging and processing of library materials as needed.
· Works on special projects; performs similar or related work as required or as the situation dictates.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required; Masters in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school is highly desirable. One year of previous library or related experience required. Previous experience working with children and young adults required.
General knowledge of library procedures, methods, and techniques. Ability to work with library staff and the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to follow directions and complete projects with minimum supervision. Ability to communicate clearly, both orally in writing. Ability to assess the needs of the community for public library services. Some budgetary skills, good communication skills, and excellent communication skills required.
