Circulation Aide, Winchester Public Library (Winchester)
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Head of Circulation Services, perform a variety of Circulation Desk duties and provide information and assistance to library patrons in all matters related to Circulation functions in the adult and children’s areas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform all tasks associated with the loaning of library materials: issue library cards, process library check-outs, renewals, returns, fine payment, processing payments for lost or damaged materials.
Regularly scheduled on the Circulation Desk.
Process all materials arriving in delivery from network transfers; prepare outgoing materials for delivery.
Provide circulation related assistance and information to patrons; understand, explain and enforce routine library and network policies; maintain and respect patron confidentiality at all times; interact with patrons and staff both in-person, on the telephone, as well as electronically in a professional and courteous manner. Handle complaints and refer when necessary to a Circulation Clerk or the Head of Circulation Services.
Perform routine troubleshooting of circulation computers and peripherals; remedy problems to the extent of ability and refer all other problems to appropriate staff members.
Sort and shelve library materials, assist with maintenance of orderly and neat environment, shift areas of the collection as directed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: At the request of the Head of Circulation Services, provide direction to Library Pages.
INDEPENDENT ACTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY:
Under the general supervision of the Head of Circulation Services, perform independently within a broad scope of library policies and procedures; errors could result in lost revenue from fine processing, loss of materials inaccurately checked-out, and loss of confidence by the general public and adverse public relations for the town.
COMPETENCIES:
Able to represent the library in a positive and professional manner and have the ability to combine accuracy, patience, tact, firmness and grace under pressure
Speaking for effective communication. Includes use of telephone and e-mails.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to operate a keyboard and view a computer monitor on a regular basis
Ability to reach for items on high and low shelves, as required
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
Sustained periods of standing.
Substantial lifting and carrying of library materials (up to 50 pounds), including bookcarts (170 pounds)
Qualifications
Minimum one year of college
Minimum one year working in a public library
Must pass written shelving exam
Complete familiarity with use of computers as well as experience with Innovative Interfaces (Sierra) or similar ILS

$20.23 - $29.53 / hourSalary Notes
Limited, prorated benefits. Candidates can expect to start in the bottom half of the range.
