College Archivist & Systems Librarian, Colby-Sawyer College (New London, NH)
Description
The Cleveland Colby Colgate Archives College Archivist & Systems Librarian is responsible for the management and administration of the college archives, manuscripts and personal papers, special collections. This position provides classroom, and research and instruction support, to courses in History and Political Studies (HPS) within the School of Business & Social Sciences. This position also holds primary responsibility for the effective functioning of the library’s technology infrastructure (ILS, library website, digital collections, related tools) and integration with campus systems (Moodle, SIS).
Responsibilities
-Performs day-to-day archival practices (evaluate, select, accession, inventory and organize) on holdings using archival standards and systems.
-Liaises with, and provides research and instruction support for courses in HPS.
-Provides collection development support for courses in HPS.
-Builds LibGuides and other tools for faculty in liaising areas.
-Supports the college’s oral history project.
-Creates and maintains the archives website and digital archives collection, creating digital objects and their corresponding metadata in Preservica.
-Cares for holdings using proper preservation and conservation techniques.
-Maintains Colby-Sawyer College’s institutional archives, including preparing retention schedules and coordinating with record creators to ensure record transfers to the archives.
-Prepares and administers policies and statistics for Archives collection development and use, including copyright issues.
-Trains and supervises student workers, interns and independent studies students on Archival practices.
-Provides archival reference services to students, faculty, staff and community members.
-Prepares DACS and EAD compliant finding aids.
-Creates online and physical displays and exhibits to increase awareness and knowledge of the college history as well as the personal papers and manuscript collections.
-Prepare and update archives information material as needed.
-Coordinate and oversee all daily operations associated with the ILS which includes system administrator functions, maintenance functions, upgrades, maintenance of Reserves, maintain customizable options in the user interface, generate statistical reports for ILS and electronic resource activities, troubleshoots and resolves service disruptions and user help inquiries.
-Update library staff about evolving electronic resources content and capabilities.
-Customize electronic resource platforms, when applicable, to the desired specifications of the Reference Staff.
-Assists with maintaining/updating the library's webpages through LibGuides while ensuring website accessibility and best practices.
Other Duties
-Covers Circulation Desk as needed.
-Digitizes all manner of records using archival standards, including paper records, photographic materials (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, stereoscopes, paper prints, 35mm slides and film negatives), art, textiles, various audiovisual materials and three-dimensional objects.
-Knowledge of the operation and proper cleaning protocols of legacy media decks is important as the college holds AV materials in the following formats: 8mm film, 16mm film, VHS, S-VHS, Mini-DV, BetaCam SP, U-Matic, U-Matic SP, VHS-C, Reel to Reel tapes, cassette tape, mini cassettes, vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays. Proper knowledge is required not only to operate but to digitize from these formats as well
-Writes a “From the Archives” piece on the history of the college for each publication of the college magazine.
Qualifications
Requirements
-MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution, with a concentration in Archives Management.
-2+ years of experience in archives management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
-Familiarity with professional standards and emerging technologies in archives and academic libraries. Knowledge of current metadata standards such as METS, MODS, and Dublin Core.
-Experience providing research and instruction and classroom support at the collegiate level.
