Early Childhood Librarian, Bolton Public Library (Bolton)

The purpose of this position, which is approximately 20.25 hours per week + Saturday rotation, is to support the Youth Services Department primarily by planning and delivering engaging programs for children from birth through Grade 2, and by supporting services to youth grades 2 and higher.  This position assists the Youth Services Librarian in daily operations, programming, and collection development for young children.  The Early Childhood Librarian contributes to creating a welcoming and enriching environment for young patrons and their families, ensuring services and materials align with library goals and community needs.

The Early Childhood Librarian will plan, promote, and present early childhood programs including weekly story times, infant lapsit programs, seasonal events, and summer reading/learning programs.  The Librarian will assist families with reader's advisory, early literacy questions, and general library use.  The Librarian will also be responsible for selection and deselection of materials according to established policy; will design flyers, posters, and other promotional materials; will assist in the use of technology; helps monitor the safety and upkeep of the Youth Services area; collaborates with the Youth Services Librarian to plan and present both recurring and special events; adheres to established library policies and procedures; stays informed on early childhood developmental trends, best practices, and children's literature; attends relevant workshops, trainings, or professional meetings; assists in keeping statistics; represents the Library at outreach and community events; performs circulation and clerical tasks as needed; and accepts and processes payments from patrons for fines, fees, or other charges.

The person in this position will be expected to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Thursdays 12 p.m. until 8:15 p.m.  This person will also be part of the Saturday rotation, working 9:30 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. approximately every third Saturday.

Qualifications

REQUIRED: a Bachelor's degree, 1-3 years of related work experience, OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the job's essential functions.  

Preferred: Master's in Library Science.

Special requirement: Satisfactory CORI check is required as a condition of employment.

Additional qualifications: Knowledge of professional library work including standard reference tools, classification systems, and automated systems (Evergreen);  knowledge of and interest in youth literature including controversial literature and media; ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy; ability to use a variety of software programs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to manage interactions with members of the public; ability to respond appropriately to urgent situations (e.g., medical emergency, building evacuation); excellent written and oral communication skills; organization; creativity.

Duties may involve assignments requiring the application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination.  Visual demands include reading written documents and determining color differences. The physical and sensory demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Salary Notes

Grade 2 ($25.40 - $33.14 in 10 annual steps). Benefits are available and are pro-rated based on a 40-hour workweek.
