Part Time Adult Services Librarian, Milton Public Library (Milton)
The Milton Public Library is a busy suburban library that serves as a community center for the Town’s 28,000 residents. The Library staff, consisting of a combination of 21 full and part time positions, provides library services from six to seven days a week throughout the year.
The Milton Public Library seeks an Adult Services Librarian to be part of our larger Adult Services team. This position supports the work of the Adult Services Department, primarily covering public service desks. The Adult Services Department is involved in reference, programming, patron-facing technology, and collection management for adults in a library that values creating a welcoming, inspiring, and responsive space to support a thriving community. Milton’s adult population ranges from parents and caregivers to new empty nesters to active and involved seniors.
This position will cover three weeknights and alternate Fridays and Saturdays.
The successful candidate will have strong technology skills; enthusiasm for reference, programming, and collection development; exceptional customer service skills; and a commitment to professional development.
Supervision Received
This role reports to the Head of Adult Services.
Essential Functions
- Provides reference services and reader’s advisory for users in a variety of formats (in-person, phone, online)
- Assists visitors in locating materials and using public access computers for the public catalog and online resources
- Provides basic technology support, including: computers, wifi, scanner, and printing services
- Participates in training and support services for users of adult collections
- Participates in professional development
Secondary Responsibilities
- Participates in collection development and management as assigned
- Assists users with access to the Milton Historical Society collection
- Assists with Library initiatives such as the Library of Things, as assigned
- Covers shifts in other departments as necessary
- Represents the Library at off-site meetings and workshops as requested
Qualifications
Education: Minimum requirement is a master’s in library science, or equivalent degree.
Experience: A minimum of two years of library or equivalent experience with three to five preferred. We are looking for someone with customer service experience and solid computer skills. The successful candidate must be a detail-oriented team player who functions well in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill: A broad knowledge of library functions, library systems, technology and other equipment. The ability to read and interpret documents and manuals. The ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Strong oral and written communication skills.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry books and other library materials, push loaded book trucks, and operate a computer keyboard and barcode scanner. Willingness and ability to work in a variety of locations at the Library. Work schedule includes nights and weekends.
