Head of Young Adult Services, Tilton Library (Tilton Fund) (Deerfield)
The Town of Deerfield seeks a Head of Young Adult Services reporting to the Tilton Library Director. Proficient communication and organizational skills, familiarity with standard office software and internet applications, attention to detail, internal staff and patron support, customer service skills, and library experience required. Duties include: provide services at the teen circulation desk; facilitate teen advisory board; plan teen programs; develop the collection of books, movies, audio, digital, and other items for young adults; provide marketing and social media content; strategize and implement library policies/procedures; collaborate with and provide outreach to schools and other local organizations; and assist with patron technology. Permanent part time non-benefitted position, 10.75 hours/week with potential to expand up to 16.75 hours week in the future.
DEFINITION
The Young Adult Librarian plans, organizes, implements the programs, circulation, collections, and materials for patrons ages 12-19.. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Plans, organizes, conducts, and supervises library programming for young adults. Arranges programs utilizing library staff, volunteers, and outside vendors, as necessary.
Participates in the provision of teen circulation services including the interlibrary loan program, checking books and library materials in to and out of the library, and processing of special-order items.
Assists library patrons in the use and selection of materials; Participates in short- and long-term planning for library services to young adults as well as general library programs.
Orders materials for the young adult collection using professional publications and sources. Weeds the collection on a continuous basis in accordance with library criteria.
Answers reference questions and assists teen patrons in finding suitable materials for research information and recreation.
Conducts and coordinates programs with middle and high schools and other community groups.
Develops flyers and social media content to publicize the services and resources of the young adult section of the library; prepares news releases in consultation with the Library Director.
Prepares narrative and statistical reports for the Library Director, Trustees, and the State.
Participates in the preparation of library interactive and static displays.
Participates in library associations and regional library services; attends workshops to keep informed and current with library trends, techniques and professional issues.
Studies trends in young adult library services; develops and recommends changes to programming to the Director.
Maintains budget for collection and programs.

Under general direction, the employee plans and prioritizes the work independently, in accordance with standard practices and previous training. Employee is expected to solve most problems of detail or unusual situations by adapting methods or interpreting instructions accordingly. Instructions for new assignments or special projects usually consist of statements of desired objectives, deadlines and priorities. Technical and policy problems or changes in procedures are discussed with supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The employee, as a regular and continuing part of the job, leads volunteers in accomplishing assigned work and also performs non-supervisory work that is usually of the same kind and levels as is done by the group led. The employee provides training to part time teen library assistants and new volunteers; reports to the supervisor on disciplinary problems, performance and training needs of volunteers; resolves simple, informal complaints of volunteers and refers others to the supervisor; may approve leave for a few hours or for emergencies.

NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Relationships are primarily with co-workers, vendors and the public involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems. Other regular contacts are with service recipients and employees of outside organizations. More than ordinary courtesy, tact and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints or deal with hostile, uncooperative or uninformed persons.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree preferred, and 2-3 years of related library experience; preferably with young adult programming and collection, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS
Knowledge: Knowledge of the principles of library administration including collection development, planning, coordination and budget; library specific computer applications; knowledge of literature and programming for young adults. Knowledge of Evergreen and Google Workplace
Abilities: Ability to train and coordinate staff or volunteers; express oneself clearly and prepare and deliver reports orally and in writing; ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, and patrons in a fast-paced environment; ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with all patrons.
Skill: Proficient computer skills, mathematical skills, recordkeeping and clerical skills, written and oral communication skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The majority of work is performed in typical library setting.
PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS
Physical Skills: The work principally involves sitting, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. May be required to lift objects such as books, files, boxes of papers, office supplies, and office equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
Motor Skills: Duties require motor skills for activities such as moving objects, using office equipment, including but not limited to telephones, personal computers, handheld technology, and other office equipment.
Visual Skills: Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.

Qualifications
