Grade 8/Full Time

Monday – Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm; and every third Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm with the previous Friday off

Definition
Technical and consultative work involving oversight, coordination and performance of the cataloging and processing of library materials for the Weymouth Public Libraries. Catalogue all books, publications and other materials in accordance with Weymouth Public Libraries standards and procedures.

Supervision
Works under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Library Services. With guidance, establishes own work plan and priorities, using established procedures to complete the work in accordance with established departmental policies and standards. Provides instruction and supervision to staff processing materials in conjunction with Head of Circulation.

Job Environment
Work is performed under typical office and library conditions; work environment is moderately quiet; occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours.

Operates computer and other standard office equipment.

Makes frequent contact with other town departments, vendors, library patrons, and other library organizations; contacts are by phone, in person, and in writing, and require excellent customer service skills.

Essential Functions

Plans, performs and supervises the cataloging and processing of library materials including coordinating the processing of new materials and performing some original cataloging. Resolves problems and oversees workload. Makes recommendations for developing or reviewing procedures and plans for future operations. Maintains the integrity of the collection and the Old Colony Library Network database by overseeing and verifying entry of materials into network database. Regularly create reports from network database to help maintain the collection.

Determines and evaluates what materials are eligible for mending and recommends which items should be withdrawn from the collection. Coordinates the mending process.

Maintains receipt of materials ordered, with verification against invoice. Maintains acquisition records.

Performs elementary descriptive cataloging, entering materials in automated bibliographic database. Assistance in file and records maintenance.  

Participates in materials processing.

Receives, catalogs, processes, and maintains serials.  

Greets visitors to library and assists library patrons in use of materials, responds to requests for information and assistance.

Meets regularly with other department heads to coordinate departmental projects and activities, and ensure consistent service across all areas of the library.

Participates in relevant Old Colony Library Network committees and roundtables.

Performs general circulation duties as assigned and assists with training new employees.

Performs a variety of library clerical tasks and other duties, as assigned.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Education: Minimum of a two-year degree required; a four-year degree preferred.

Experience: Five years of previous work experience within a library setting including cataloging and technical processing.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge: Knowledge of library techniques, systems and procedures. A knowledge of acquisition, processing, and cataloging procedures is required.

Ability and Skill: A high degree of attention to detail is required. Ability to self-motivate and be a team player. Ability to prioritize and complete tasks and projects under strict deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships. Excellent customer service skills.

Physical Requirements
Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching. May be required to climb stairs or a ladder to access files or books. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 60 pounds.
