Part Time Saturday/Substitute Librarian I Youth Services, Cary Memorial Library (Lexington)

Cary Memorial Library is seeking a creative and energetic person to join our team working one Saturday a month in the Youth Services Department. The Youth Services Department works as a strong team, playing to the strengths and skills of our members. We celebrate the diversity of our community through our programming and our collections. We are a busy and active department, embracing the energy and enthusiasm with a service population from toddlers to teens.  

Youth Services Librarians are expected to push their knowledge and comfort zones to stay current with the needs and interests of the community. Youth Services Librarians staff a variety of service desks, including the Children’s Service Desks and the Teen Room Desk.  This position works one Saturday (9 am - 5 pm) on a 4 week cycle, mainly in the Teen Room assisting patrons in locating materials and performing reader’s advisory, as well as handling some circulation tasks. For the duration of the library’s current construction project, the person in this position will work Reference at the Main Service Desk, performing reference services for all ages. This position does not include paid time off or paid benefits.

Schedule: 1 Saturday every 4 weeks from 9-5 with an unpaid hour meal break. Expected Saturdays through August 2026 are 09/27, 10/25, 11/22, 12/20, 01/17, 02/14, 03/14, 04/11, 05/09, 06/06, 08/01, and 08/29. Additional substitute hours may be available during weekdays and evenings. Differential pay available evenings after 6 PM. Possible opportunities to work optional Sundays at an hourly rate of time and half may be available.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will hold an MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution or have an equivalent combination of education, certification and experience, will be self-motivated team player and who possesses the ability to establish rapport with patrons of all ages as well as demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.  

Previous experience working with children or teens, and knowledge of the developmental stages of youth, as well as children’s and teen literature is preferred. PC proficiency is required and experience using automated library systems is preferred. Ability to speak Chinese, Korean, or Spanish is a plus.
