Library Aide/Cataloger, Adams Free Library (Adams)

Works under direct supervision of the Library Director.  Makes constant contacts with the general public and occasionally with other town departments.  Cataloger performs a variety of general library procedures related primarily to technical and circulation services.  Library Aide assists in general circulation procedures, and may help with research activities & youth services.

Errors could result in reduced levels of library service and adverse public relations.

Checks materials in and out at circulation desk; registers new patrons; answers telephone; assists with reserve and interlibrary loan systems; maintains patron registration cards.  Maintains files of stored periodicals.  Inputs bibliographic information to catalog new materials.  Assists patrons by giving directions and locating materials.  May assist in the processing and shelving of items, magazines, and newspapers.  Performs clerical tasks related to office services, such as typing and filing registration cards. Assists in Children's Department when needed.

Light to moderate physical effort required in performing duties under typical library conditions.  Frequent bending and stretching.  Occasional lifting in excess of 15 pounds.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school diploma required; some college preferred.  One-year public service experience, preferably in a library; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.  Computer proficiency required; experience using an automated library system preferred.



Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Ability to follow instructions and to learn library methods and procedures.  Ability to relate well to the public.  Appreciation of and attention to detail.  Ability to type.  



Broad knowledge of the arts is recommended.
