BiblioTemps® is an employment service of the Massachusetts Library System that provides experienced library workers for temporary placements in public, academic, and special libraries throughout Massachusetts.

Title:                   Outreach & Research Instruction Librarian

Location:           Harold F. Johnson Library, Hampshire College (Amherst, MA)

Position Type: Temporary

Start date:        December 10, 2025

End date:           March 20, 2026

Schedule:         Tues, Wed, Thurs 9am-5pm (one-hour lunch unpaid)

Pay Rate:          $24.00 per hour

Description:

Hampshire Colleges seeks a creative and student-centered Outreach & Research Instruction Librarian for a temporary position.

The Outreach & Research Instruction Librarian plays a key role in advancing student success, faculty collaboration, and equitable access to research support. 

Responsibilities:

·      Design and lead research instruction, workshops, and tutorials that promote student agency and critical information literacy. 

·      Provide reference services, individual consultations and drop-in support tailored to student and faculty needs. 

·      Create online learning objects such as resource guides.

·      Attend and participate in meetings with library staff and faculty.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

·      Demonstrated success in delivering research instruction and information literacy programs. 

·      Passion for working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. 

·      Demonstrated support for a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, with evidence of applying these values to collections, staffing, programming, and services. 

·      Ability to cultivate and maintain inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

·      Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. 

·      Demonstrated experience with collection development and acquisitions. 

·      Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently in a team-based environment that values creativity and experimentation. 

Required Certification, Education, and Experience: 

·      ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS or equivalent). 

·      At least 3 years of experience in research support, instruction, or public-facing library services. 

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

·      Experience working in a liberal arts or academic college setting. 

·      Familiarity with critical information literacy, open educational resources (OER), or alternative pedagogies. 

·      Experience with Learning Management Systems, such as Moodle or Canvas. 

·      Experience using SpringShare Products and information literacy tools. 

·      Demonstrated understanding of relevant scholarly communication issues (e.g., intellectual property rights and Fair Use). 

·      Proficiency with citation management software.
