Young Adult Librarian, Manchester-by-the-Sea Public Library (Manchester-by-the-Sea)

Under the direction of the Library Director, the Young Adult Librarian will perform a wide variety of services for library users ages 12-17, including planning, and implementing dynamic programming, curating and providing access to high quality relevant materials, mentoring young adults to develop and plan for personal goals, and creating a safe, welcoming, and stimulating environment

Position Description and Job Functions

· Plans, promotes, coordinates and conducts library programs aimed at young adult interests to actively engage teens and tweens

· Manages the selection, processing, inventory, and weeding of the young adult materials collection under the guidance and supervision of the Youth Services Librarian or the Library Director

· Communicates with other youth leaders in the community; participates in outreach efforts to share resources and information

· Supports young adults by engaging with parents, educators, and other youth-serving agencies

· Provides prompt, courteous and direct assistance to library users

· Curates developmentally appropriate resources and services that encourage exploration and personal development, and develop literacy and life skills that support higher education and/or career readiness.

· Attends staff meetings, workshops and continuing education opportunities to develop job competencies.

· Uses technology in the course of performing job duties and to promote library programs and services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Positive and enthusiastic approach to customer service, with specific interest in engaging tweens and teens.

· Ability to relate well and effectively communicate with patrons of varied backgrounds, ages and abilities.

· Demonstrated technology literacy and competency.

· Demonstrates solid decision making, organizational and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to work effectively with staff, administrators and volunteers, and work as part of a cohesive team.

· Ability to maintain a calm atmosphere, assure safety and respond to emergencies.

Required Physical and Work Environment Conditions

· Ability to lift books and other materials, weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, from shelves ranging from 6" to 8' from the floor and return them to their proper place(s).

· Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time; move throughout the Library; bend, reach and crouch to shelve and retrieve materials; push and pull carts loaded with materials.

· Ability to work in public settings subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.

Hours:

This part-time position requires scheduling flexibility and will usually include 16-19 hours per week (to include weekdays, evenings, Saturdays in rotation) and may include additional substitute hours as needed.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include a Masters of Library and Information Science as well as 1-2 years of related work experience.  An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will also be considered.  Current MLIS candidates are encouraged to apply.
